Samuel Ludwig Schnell (baptised on 7 May 1775 – 3 January 1849) was a Swiss academic and jurist.

Biography

Samuel Ludwig Schnell was born in Burgdorf. He was a professor of law at the University of Bern and a member of the Supreme Court of the Swiss Confederation.

Schnell welcomed the French Revolution. Thanks to his connections with the Stapfer family, he was one of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi's patrons in Burgdorf.

With the Civil Code for the Canton of Bern, which came into force between 1826 and 1831, he created the first cantonal codification of private law in German-speaking Switzerland.[1]
