Scranton Preparatory School is a Jesuit, Catholic, college preparatory day school for boys and girls within the Diocese of Scranton. It enrolls 835 students and is fully accredited by the Pennsylvania State Department of Public Instruction and by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. It is a member of the Jesuit Secondary Education Association, the National Association of Independent Schools, and the National Catholic Educational Association. Tuition (fees included) is $12,200 per year. A full program of athletics and extracurricular activities is offered to all students. Admission is by examination and interview by the Admissions Committee.

Academics

Scranton Preparatory School offers only academic courses, college prep in nature. Four years of English, mathematics, and religious education are required for graduation.[2][3][4]

Three years of science are required for graduation. Freshmen are placed in an introductory chemistry and physics course while sophomores take biology. They may then choose to take chemistry, physics, or both. Advanced Placement courses are offered in chemistry, physics, and biology.[5]

Two years of classical Latin and two years of a modern foreign language are also required – either Spanish, German, or French. Motivated students may take a first level course of an additional language their senior year. Upper level courses are offered in the three modern foreign languages as well as in classical Latin. Students may choose to take A.P. Latin during their junior year. Classical Greek is offered as an elective for juniors, who are then encouraged to continue in Greek in their senior year.[6]

Two years of social studies are required of freshmen and sophomores, but upper level students may choose to take a number of honors and Advanced Placement courses in the subject.[7]

Courses in computer science, art, music, and public speaking are required of all students, with additional electives in computer science and art offered to seniors.[8][9]

History

Scranton Prep first opened its doors in the year of 1944. Since that September day, the school has had a rather remarkable history. The original building was located on the corner of Wyoming Avenue and Mulberry Street. It had a peaceful existence there until 1961, when the construction of an expressway necessitated a move to a new location. After making the Old Main Building of the University of Scranton its temporary home for two years, Prep moved to its permanent location, the former Women’s Institute Building of the International Correspondence Schools, at 1000 Wyoming Avenue.

Founded as a boys' school, Scranton Prep became co-educational in 1971 when a disastrous fire destroyed Marywood Seminary, a local girls’ academy conducted by the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters.

Scranton Prep was established as a division of the University of Scranton, but received its official charter of separate incorporation in 1977.

Scranton Preparatory School is one of 57 Jesuit secondary schools in the United States. In 1986, Prep was named a National Exemplary School by the United States Department of Education.[10]
