Shanghai American School (SAS) is a non-profit, co-educational international preparatory school established in 1912 in Shanghai, China. It has a history of more than a 100 years and is well-known among the international schools in Shanghai. SAS holds two campuses across Shanghai. The Puxi campus is located in Huacao Town, Minhang District and The Pudong campus is located in the Shanghai Links Executive Community in Pudong.[3]

Description

Shanghai American School first opened their doors on Tuesday of September 17, 1912, with a total of 38 students in the old campus of North Szechuen Road.[5] Today, there are more than 3000 students from approximately 40 countries, and nearly 400 teachers from over 27 countries attending the school. Both campuses offer an American-based curriculum from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade, and offer both the AP and IB education systems from 9th to 12th grade.[6]
Curriculum
Shanghai American School offers courses in both the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) as well as the AP Capstone Diploma. SAS offers a wide variety of course selections within both programs, as well as course selection outside of the IB or AP.
The SAS high school requires students to earn the following minimum credits to graduate: English - 4 Math - 3 Science - 3 Social Studies - 3 Foreign Language - 2 Physical Education - 2 Electives - 5
Facilities
Puxi Campus, established 1912 (Pre-K–12)
The Puxi campus is located in the southwest of Shanghai, west of the Hongqiao International Airport. There are currently separate buildings for the Elementary/Kindergarten, Middle School, and High School, with a separate building for the HS Social Studies, English, and Art classrooms. Additional facilities include a finance house, library, two media centres, and two connected cafeterias. Sports facilities include two grass pitches capable of hosting sports such as rugby, soccer, and baseball, a track and field, three sports halls with basketball and volleyball courts, a fitness center, theater, and an aquatics center. The Puxi campus cafeteria is provided by Sodexho. Students are given a wide variety of meal options, including Italian, American, and Asian cuisine, as well as self-served salad bars, custom sandwich bars, and cafes.
Pudong Campus, established 1998 (Pre-K–12)
The Pudong campus is based inside the grounds of the Shanghai Links Executive Community, further north from the Pudong International Airport. This complex includes a Pre-K3, Pre-K 4, Kindergarten, elementary school, middle school and high school building that are all interconnected. Two cafeterias, multiple gymnasiums, fitness room, Black Box, Aquatics Center, and three fields are also present. A Performing Arts Center is currently being built and will be completed in the fall of 2015. The Pudong campus cafeteria is provided by Eurest. Students are given a wide variety of meal options, including Italian, American, and Asian cuisine, as well as self-served salad bars, custom sandwich bars, and cafes.
School activities
SAS is currently an active member of Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC), and participates in many sports such as volleyball, softball, swimming, soccer (football), rugby, tennis, baseball, Track and Field, and basketball, or the arts such as dance, band, orchestra, choir, and theatre. It is also a participant of the China Cup of sports. The Middle School participates in the China International Schools Sports Association (CISSA) League. Students of both the East and West campuses are participants of the Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC)[2].
SAS attended the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament twice and hosted the first ever National History Bee and Bowl tournament in Asia, The History Bee and Bowl of China, in February 2012. High school MUN members have the opportunity to attend conferences such as THIMUN Singapore and NAIMUN, in addition to smaller conferences throughout the year. SAS Puxi also hosts SHAMUN in the second semester, a two-day MUN conference for international students around Shanghai. SAS Pudong hosts SHASMUN in the first semester, a three-day international MUN conference. The Puxi campus hosted the very first Relay for Life event in Shanghai in April 2007, and it is now an annual event on both campuses. The Pudong campus hosted its first ever 30 Hour Famine in 2008, and it is now an annual event on both campuses.
It also offers a wide variety of extra curricular activities, with over 100 clubs in the high school alone (as of the 2014-15 academic year). Students are actively involved in clubs including but not limited to National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, International Thespian Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, SAS Honor Council, Model United Nations (MUN), Architectural Design Club, Wokai, Community Service, Quiz Bowl, National History Bee and Bowl, Make A Child Smile, Forensics, Amnesty International, Roots and Shoots, Habitat for Humanity, Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), Documentary Film Making, cooking, Comedy Club, Tabletop Gaming Society, Programming Club, Math Club (popularly called the AoPS or Art of Problem Solving Club, Mu Alpha Theta Club, Korean culture appreciation club (KCAC), Robotics Club, Fencing Club, and Engineering Club. Some of the clubs listed previously require additional fees to enter.
Notable students and alumni
- James R. LiIIey, from the class of 45, was an American diplomat.
- Jung So-ra, from the class of 2009, is the winner of Miss Korea 2010
- Emily Prager, a former actress, was a teacher in the Pudong campus.
- J. Stapleton Roy, former US ambassador to China, left SAS after Communist takeover of China in 1949
- Jean Fritz, an American author, spent her early life here as a missionary kid.[7]
