Sheikhupura Fort also known as Qilla Sheikhupira is a fort near the city of Sheikhupura in Punjab, Pakistan. The fort is believed to be built by Emperor Jehangir because the Hiran Minar was also built by the Jahangir during 1607-1646. Hiran Minar is also situated in the city of Sheikhpura.
The fort dates back to the earliest Mughal Era. The fort currently is not in state of any type of visit as it is heavily damaged. It remains an amazing creation of Mughal Art.[2] Over the centuries, many modifications were made to the landmark. The fort was used as a Royal Residence by Jahangir and his son. The Sikhs contributed a lot to the fort by building Havelis (Mansions) during their reign in Punjab region. In 1847, Maharani Jindin was confined in this fort, under the supervision of one of eminent general of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Sardar general Gurmukh Singh Lamba, along with Bur Singh of Mukerian till hostility began after Multan disturbances. <<The Chief of Punjab-Sir Lepel Griffin>>
Preservation
United States will be helping Pakistan to restore the Fort which is currently badly damaged and is closed for public to visit. It was reported that the National Heritage Monument of Pakistan will be restored in the next 3 years and will then be opened for tourists.[3]
