Shit test

A "shit test" is an effort (sometimes attempted subconsciously) by one person to appraise the worthiness and social ranking of another by noting whether or not they will accept a submissive role (or "eat shit" in profane vernacular). Typically this will come in the form of a request, often innocuous. To fulfill the request is to fail the shit test. Or, the test may come in the form of a dismissive insult; responding to it in a defensive manner fails the test.

"Shit-testing" is evolutionarily ingrained, commonly involving females gauging the alpha status of males. Males who fail shit-tests are judged to be weaker and less desirable as the sires of one's offspring, i.e., they're the proverbial "nice guys" who "finish last", whereas the passer of the test is a "jerkboy" or an "asshole" who, paradoxically, "gets the girl".

William the Conqueror was born in the 11th Century to an unmarried Duke of Normandy, the love child of his mistress. His illegitimate status didn’t stop him from rising to success in battle and leadership, eventually winning the status of King.

During his twenties, he sent a request to Matilda of Flanders for her hand in marriage. Matilda sent back a reply that she was far too high-borne to marry a bastard. When his messenger delivered news of the lady’s response, William rode from Normandy to the neighboring Flanders on his horse, where he found Matilda. He then threw her on the ground by her long, signature braids, in full view of her servants and onlookers. Then he rode off pridefully without a word.

After that, Matilda refused to marry anyone but William. They wed, and she bore him 9 children, including two future Kings.[1]
