"Singing a Song in the Morning" (originally titled "Religious Experience") was the first Kevin Ayers single, released three months after his debut solo LP Joy of a Toy. It did not feature on the album, however, the b-side, "Eleanor's Cake (Which Ate Her)", was taken from the album and is considered a classic Ayers recording.

For the recording of Syd Barrett's first solo album—The Madcap Laughs—Soft Machine was brought in to do overdubs for a few of Barrett's tracks.[1] It was during this time, Barrett did guitar for Ayers on his track "Religious Experience",[2][3] this version was not released until the 2003 reissue of Joy.[1]

Part of the lyrics of "Singing a Song in the Morning" have been used in "Moon in June", the suite by Robert Wyatt included in Third, the Soft Machine album released in June 1970.[4]
