South Huntington is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 9,422 at the 2010 census.[1] Residents have a Huntington Station postal address.

South Huntington is the birthplace of Walt Whitman, and a shopping mall named after him is nearby. It is also home to St. Anthony's High School and Walt Whitman High School.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.8 km2), all land.[1]

Demographics of the CDP

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 9,465 people, 3,299 households, and 2,533 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,802.0 per square mile (1,081.2/km²). There were 3,379 housing units at an average density of 1,000.3/sq mi (386.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.47% White, 0.85% African American, 0.06% Native American, 3.55% Asian, 0.82% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.76% of the population.

There were 3,299 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.2% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 17.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $177,950, and the median income for a family was $184,828. Males had a median income of $60,440 versus $41,867 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $34,011. About 3.3% of families and 4.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.5% of those under age 18 and 8.9% of those age 65 or over.

Transportation

The Walt Whitman Mall is a major hub for bus routes in the area. The following routes terminate there:[5][6]

  • S23 to Babylon via Wyandanch
  • S29 to Babylon via Deer Park Avenue
  • S54 to Patchogue
  • H20 to Huntington
  • H30 to Huntington via Greenlawn
  • H40 to Northport
  • N79 to Hicksville

The S1 bus along New York State Route 110 also serves it while en route to either Amityville or Halesite.
