Square One Shopping Centre is a shopping centre located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. It is one of the largest shopping centres in Canada and the largest shopping centre in Ontario, with over 1,700,000 square feet (160,000 m2) of retail space and more than 360 stores and services.[citation needed]

Square One is located at 100 City Centre Drive in Downtown Mississauga, about Lua error in Module:Convert at line 272: attempt to index local 'cat' (a nil value). from Downtown Toronto and 16 km (9.9 mi) from Toronto Pearson International Airport. Square One's location is adjacent to the interchange of Highway 403 and Hurontario Street.

The mall is near the Mississauga Civic Centre, the Mississauga Living Arts Centre, residential condominiums, Mississauga's Central Library, a Chapters bookstore, and a 13-screen Cineplex Cinemas movie theatre featuring an IMAX screen.

Located within the mall grounds is the main terminal of MiWay (formerly Mississauga Transit) bus network, which was opened in 1997, and a Peel Regional Police station, which was opened in 2002.

The Mississauga Central Lions Club has managed a large farmers market in the parking lots adjacent to Square One from 1975 through 2013. In 2014 the farmers market relocated to the parking lot at 3 Robert Speck Parkway, just one block east of Hurontario Street and renamed itself as The Mississauga Central Lions Club "Lions Farmers Market". Current details on the Lions Farmers Market may be found at http://LionsFarmersMkt.com. The Market is open from 8am - 4pm on Sundays, between early June and late October annually. It remains one of the largest farmers markets in Ontario. Over its history the market has been in five sites around Square One: first by Mississauga's first City Hall (demolished many years ago), then it was at the far north end of the Walmart Supercentre parking lot for many years, in 2006 it moved to the south side of the mall, to the parking lot adjacent to the Mississauga Civic Centre. For the 2007 season, the market was moved again, this time to a larger location at the northwest parking lot of the mall, near what was then the Zellers store which was taken over by Target (in 2013). The market was moved last in 2010 to the parking lot of the Cineplex Cinemas Mississauga (formerly Coliseum Mississauga) at 309 Rathburn Road West.

History

During the 1980s, the mall underwent numerous expansions, adding 80 more stores and over a million square feet to the property, Dominion closing for more mall space, and a new Eaton's department store.[citation needed]

During the summer of 2009, work began on the next phase of development. The north-east parking lot, behind Walmart was converted into a series of box stores with a reduced amount of parking, including a Whole Foods Market, Crate & Barrel, an unnamed restaurant and two still unassigned stores.[1]

In January 2013, Square One started a major renovation on the main corridor from the Target store to the centre court/food court. Burger King and Bowring were forced to move due to the expansion of the food court across from the existing food court. Expected to be done during Fall 2013. Square One will also expand by adding its concept Grand Centre Court, which will add at least (220,000 sq ft (20,439 m2)) square feet extra.[2]

On June 14, 2013, Sears Canada announced that it will be closing its store at Square One and Yorkdale as of March 9, 2014.[3]

On June 27, 2013, Empire Theatres announced that they will be selling their theatre at Square One to Landmark Cinemas.[4] On October 29, 2013, Empire Theatres closed and reopened as Landmark Cinemas on October 31, 2013.[citation needed]

On December 6, 2013, La Maison Simons announced that it will be taking over most of the space occupied by Sears, with a flagship store opening in Spring 2016.[5]

On October 1, 2014, Landmark Cinemas announced that it would not be renewing its lease with the mall and that the theatre itself would be closing on October 3, 2014.[citation needed]
