Starset is an American alternative rock band from Columbus, Ohio, United States.[3] Formed by Dustin Bates in 2013,[4] they released their debut album Transmissions the following year.[5][6][7]

History

Formation and Transmissions (2013-present)

Starset was formed by Downplay vocalist Dustin Bates in 2013 and he takes the roles of lead singer and songwriter whilst also playing the keyboard.[8] Bates' interest in astronomy was first fueled when acquiring his PhD in electrical engineering as he studied at Ohio University. He also has completed research for the U.S. Air Force and taught at the International Space University.[9]

The band released their debut album Transmissions on July 8, 2014.[10] Starset is part of the group, The Starset Society, who are meant to help develop on the scientific and political themes of Transmissions. The music on Transmissions has been compared to the style of Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, Skillet, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Three Days Grace and Red.[7][11]

Rob Graves, who produced, "Transmissions," announced on January 26th, 2016 that the making of Starset's sophomore record, "officially commenced."[12]

Musical style

Starset's musical style is described by Erie Times-News' Dave Richards as "blend[ing] the progressive aspirations of Muse with the openhearted approach of emo and muscular power of bands like Breaking Benjamin."[2] Their style is described by Bates himself as "blending symphonics with electronics with riff-driven, baritone guitar hard rock."[2] Influences of Starset include Hans Zimmer, Nine Inch Nails, Sigur Ros, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Deftones, Angels and Airwaves and Breaking Benjamin.[2]
