Steele Canyon Charter High School is a public charter high school located in the San Diego East County community of Spring Valley, California. Opened in 2000, the school serves students in grades nine through grade twelve. Operating as a California charter school since July 1, 2007.

History
2000-2001 School Year
- Steele Canyon High School opens. 9th Grade is the only grade level.
2001-2002 School Year
- Steele Canyon High School 9th and 10th grade levels.
2002-2003 School Year
- Steele Canyon High School 9th -11th grade levels. Steele Canyon High School begins to compete in varsity level sports. SCHS went on to win two league titles that year - boy's golf and girl's tennis.
2003-2004 School Year
- Steele Canyon High School a 9th-12th grade. Making Steele Canyon a four year comprehensive high school.
- October: The severity of the Cedar Fire causes Steele Canyon High School to close for a week and their first-ever planned Homecoming was postponed two weeks.
- The Class of 2004 is the first graduating class of Steele Canyon. First Prom at the San Diego Convention Center.
2004-2005 School Year
- Class of 2005 is the second graduating class.
2005-2006 School Year
- Class of 2006 is the third graduating class.
2006-2007 School Year
- Steele Canyon High School votes to become a charter school.
- Class of 2007 is the fourth graduating class.
2007-2008 School Year
- Class of 2008 is the fifth graduating class.
- 1 July: Steele Canyon High School becomes a California Public Charter School
- August: Steele Canyon has a ribbon cutting ceremony to kick off the opening of its Charter School doors. It begins its "Maiden Charter Voyage" with Dr. Craig Rocha and its first Governing Board at the helm.
- 20–28 October: Steele Canyon serves as an evacuation center for San Diego residents threatened by the Harris fire which was one of the larger October 2007 California wildfires. The fire later threatens the school itself. Firefighters, with helicopter support, defend the school by using a back burning technique on the hills nearby. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger visits Steele Canyon High School and gives a press conference addressing the fires.[1]

Athletics
Steele Canyon Cougars compete in the Grossmont South League Conference and the San Diego Section of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).[2]
The school has teams that compete in CIF in the following sports: baseball (boys), basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football (boys), golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball (girls), Wrestling, swimming and diving, tennis, track, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling (boys).[3]
Since the Fall of 2002 (the first year of varsity-level competition), SCHS has won 29+ league titles and nine CIF championships "The Legacy":

Associated Student Body
One of the most organized, prestigious, and corrupt group of kids. Steele Canyon's ASB has been involving students into their school since the beginning. They are the backbone to this school, a talented group of kids that not only bring every student together, but the community as well.
Drama
Drama performances are occasionally held after school hours. Steele Canyon Players puts on two main performances each year, one in the fall, a play, and one in the spring, a musical - where they team up with band, dance, and choir. Steele Canyon is one of few schools in the county to put an orchestra pit during the musical with live musicians. The advance theatre class puts on One Acts in the spring. Many drama students are also involved in outside acting groups, such as The Young Actors Theater.
Instrumental Music
The Steele Canyon Band is made up of several ensembles. Marching band performs during the fall season, while Symphonic Band performs during the Winter and Spring season, along with several ensembles: Jazz Band and Small Ensembles.
Steele Regiment is Steele Canyon's Competitive Marching band that competes in the 1A category. Since 2009, band director, Heather Luck, has improved the program each year, leading Steele Regiment to compete for the first time in school history at the SCSBOA's State Championships in 2014-2015 school year, achieving 9th place in California in the 1A category.
The Steele Canyon Symphonic Band performs during the Spring Season. As of 2015, the band has made its first trip to Orlando, Florida to compete in the World Strides Music Festival, gaining a Silver 2nd with David Maslanka's piece, Give Us This Day, as well as giving some notable students national recognition for their performance.
The Music program also offers students guitar classes with beginning and intermediate/advance levels, as well as its own percussion class, colorguard class, and band class. Students have opened up their options to playing with community groups, such as the Cuyamaca College Band and several local youth symphonies.
Dance & Choir
The Vocal Music and Dance Departments have been noted for their extreme perseverance and hard work. Each year, both groups perform together during their Winter Concert and Spring Concert. Students participate in both, as well as be a part of the other Performing Arts programs. The Steele Canyon Dance Team has been one of the highlights to the school's performing arts and represents the Dance Program very well. Some students also team up with the band and drama departments to put on their annual musical during the spring. The Show Choir and Advanced Dance classes are both taught by Ms. Joan Baker-Gerner, while the Steele Canyon Dance Team is coached by Natalie Gilbert. Both do an incredible job at what they do and they never strive for anything less than excellent when it comes to their artistic creations. This program has produced many successful people as they go off to perform with Disney in California, Florida, and even Tokyo!
