Alumni

Dr. Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian American astronaut and first Indian born woman in space is perhaps Tagore Baal Niketan's most famous alumni. Born in Karnal, India in 1962, she completed her schooling from Tagore Baal Niketan in 1976. She was one of the 7 crew members aboard the ill-fated space shuttle Columbia when it disintegrated upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere over Texas in 2003 killing all crew members.

At her request, NASA invited her high school Tagore Baal Niketan to take part in the SUMMER SPACE EXPERIENCE PROGRAM. Starting in 1998, every summer the International Space School Foundation in Houston, Texas, USA hosted two students from Tagore Baal Niketan each year. The program included dinner at her home complete with Indian cooking prepared by Kalpana. “Whatever you believe in do just follow your dreams. Don’t worry about whether people encourage you” an 18-year-old Indian student remembered her saying.

Till date every year 2 meritorious students from Tagore are sponsored to the programme, making it the only school in India to participate amongst many schools from the world over.
