National Central University (NCU, Chinese: 國立中央大學, Kuo-Li Chung-yang Ta-hsüeh, or 中大, Chung-ta) was founded in 1902 with roots from 258 CE in mainland China. After NCU in Nanking was renamed Nanjing University in 1949, NCU was re-established in Taiwan in 1962. The school was initially located in Miaoli, but was relocated to Zhongli in 1968, and developed into a comprehensive university. It has now become Taiwan's leading school in the fields of drama, film studies, cultural studies, sex and gender studies, Hakka studies, geophysics, space science, remote sensing, astronomy, optoelectronics, nano scitech, and business management. In 2001, NCU was selected by the Ministry of Education as one of the eleven research-oriented universities in Taiwan.

NCU now has eight colleges in different areas, including College of Liberal Arts, College of Science, College of Engineering, College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College of Biomedical Science and Engineering, College of Earth Sciences, College of Management, and College of Hakka Studies, also with areas in sociology, law and government studies, etc.

The undergraduate population is represented by the Associated Students of National Central University.

National Central University (NCU) can trace its roots back to 258 CE, Nanking.[3] NCU was founded in 1915 in Nanking, the new capital city of the early government of the Republic of China, and adopted its name in 1928. NCU moved to Chungking in 1937 when Sino-Japanese War broke out and returned to Nanking in 1946. After the ROC lost control of mainland China, it was renamed as Nanjing University when occupied by the Communist Party of China in 1949, and the former campus has been used by Nanjing Institute of Technology which was later renamed Southeast University since Nanjing University relocated in 1952. The NCU Alumni Association in Taiwan applied for reinstatement of the university in three consecutive years starting from 1956 and was approved in 1958. After four years' preparation, National Central University was reinstated in Taiwan in 1962, first as the National Central University Graduate Institute of Geophysics, in Miaoli County. In 1968, NCU moved to its current location in the Shuanglianpo (雙連坡) district of Zhongli, Taoyuan County (now Zhongli District, Taoyuan City), Taiwan province and was renamed the National Central University College of Science. In 1979, it was officially reestablished under its current name. In 2003, NCU and three other national universities established the University System of Taiwan cooperative partnership. Now NCU is a research-oriented national comprehensive university.

Location

The university's Taoyuan City campus is situated in the northern part of the island, about 45 minutes from Taipei. The large, green hilltop campus, is some distance away from the busy downtown Zhongli. NCU is only half an hour away from the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), which makes it very convenient for international travel.

NCU Lulin Observatory is located near Yushan National Park, in southern part of Taiwan island.
