The Takanami-class destroyer (たかなみ型護衛艦 Takanami-gata goeikan?) is a class of Japanese guided-missile and ASW destroyer, entering service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) from 2003.

Description

The Takanami class is a fourth generation post-war destroyer for the JMSDF, and is an evolution of the previous Murasame-class destroyer. Major changes include an improved OPS-24B Active electronically scanned array fire control system and data link, as well as a new sonar system. In terms of weaponry, the 3-inch gun on the Murasame has been replaced with a larger 127 mm gun, and the older Sea Sparrow anti-air missile in Mk-48 VLS (Vertical Launch System) has been replaced by the new Evolved Sea Sparrow ESSM (RIM-162) missiles in Mk-41 VLS, which also handles the ASROC weapons. This changes have resulted in a larger hull displacement than the Murasame by about 100 tons.

All ships in the class are named for World War II destroyers.[citation needed]
