Tarbert (Scottish Gaelic: An Tairbeart) is the main community on Harris in the Western Isles of Scotland. The name means "isthmus", "crossing point" or "portage", in Gaelic.[1] Tarbert has a car ferry terminal, which operates to Uig on Skye.[2] Tarbert's Church of Scotland parish church was built in 1862, and is within the parish of Harris.[3] Tarbert also has a Free Presbyterian church.[4]

1990 RAF air crash

On the 30 April 1990 a Royal Air Force Avro Shackleton (WR965) flying from RAF Lossiemouth and Benbecula Airport crashed near to the village, killing all ten passengers and crew on board.[5]
