Tender Is the Night (1964) is the 18th original studio album released by Johnny Mathis. It is his second album for Mercury Records.

Overview

Collaborating once again with arranger/conductor Don Costa, Mathis is heard on a typical collection of ballads that recall his earlier work on Columbia Records. Movie songs dominate this album, with the balance filled with Broadway showtunes, the obligatory standard and a pair of original songs by Bart Howard, whose work Mathis often recorded in the early years of his career.

Highlights

There are five movie songs on the album. "Tender Is the Night" is from the 1962 film of the same name and was a hit for Tony Bennett, while "Call Me Irresponsible" was the Oscar-winning song from 1963's Papa's Delicate Condition. "Laura" has music by David Raksin and was the haunting theme of the 1944 film of the same name, with words added by Johnny Mercer, while "April Love" was introduced by Mathis' contemporary Pat Boone in the 1957 film of that name. "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" comes from the Disney animated film classic Cinderella.

The work of Rodgers and Hart is represented by "A Ship Without a Sail", which had previously been recorded by both Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, while the standard "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" by Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh was a fixture in the repertoire of Judy Garland. Richard Rodgers provided both music and lyrics for the title song to the 1962 Broadway show No Strings while "Where is Love?" was a highlight of Lionel Bart's score for Oliver!. Continuing his exploration of the score of West Side Story on records, Mathis includes "Somewhere", yet another song from his recorded legacy that Barbra Streisand would record in later years. Finally, Bart Howard contributed two original songs, "Forget Me Not" and "Tomorrow Song", adding to the growing list of his work recorded by Mathis.
