Texas Tech University Independent School District (TTUISD) is an accredited learning school from kindergarten through twelfth grade program in Texas offering high school diplomas.[2] It is operated by Texas Tech University, which is located in Lubbock. TTUISD offers Individual Courses (Supplemental), Credit by Exams (CBEs), Homeschool Curriculum, and Bulk Testing Services as well as a full-time Texas Diploma Program that includes high school, middle school and elementary school.

History

Texas Tech University Independent School District (TTUISD) was established by legislative and state board action in 1993 as a "Special Purpose District" designed to educate students with special circumstances and whose educational needs were not adequately met by traditional schools. In 1998, the Commissioner of Education granted expansion of the program to include kindergarten through 8th grade. TTUISD now serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Enrollment

In 1994, the first graduating class from TTUISD consisted of only two students.[3] Now, TTUISD has a total enrollment of around 3,500 students between high school, middle school and elementary school students.[4] When including the Supplemental program and Credit by Exams, TTUISD serves over 25,500 students in total. 310 students graduated in the 2013-2014 year.

Students can enroll in courses through TTUISD’s full-time, diploma-seeking program, where students take all the state-required courses and assessments to graduate. Upon graduation, students will receive a Texas high school diploma.

Another option is the supplemental program. Students can catch up or get ahead by taking individual courses or Credit by Exams while still enrolled in their current school district.

Transfer Credits

All credits earned through TTUISD are recognized by colleges and universities.

Brazil Partnership

In 2009, TTUISD established a partnership with High School Serviços Educacionais (HSE) to offer Brazilian students the opportunity to earn an accredited U.S. high school diploma simultaneously with the Portuguese-based Brazilian high school diploma. This program has expanded from its first school, Leonardo da Vinci (Vitória, ES) to over 60 schools across the nation of Brazil. The TTUISD- HSE partner schools in Brazil employ native English speaking teachers who provide classroom assistance in addition to the online TTUISD teachers. Currently, the TTUISD-HSE Partnership serves over 2,300 Brazilian students and has provided 693 diplomas, thus opening a world of opportunities to these students.

Schools that participate in this partnership include Leonardo da Vinci, Dante Alighieri, Magno, Pentágono, Edna Roriz, Pio XII, São Miguel, Notre Dame, Jean Piaget, Christus, Dinâmica, Portal de Limeira, Damas, Santa Cecília, Agostiniano São José, GayLussac, CLQ, Master, Upaon, Uirapuru, Albert Sabin, Martha Falcão, Villa Lobos, Harmonia, FourC, Bom Jesus Internacional, Cidade Viva, Bertoni, Dom Bosco Renascença, Dinamica Anglo-Americano, Dinamica Educação Dinâmica, Dinamica Caesp, Dinamica Monjolo, Alfa Cascavel, Maxi Londrina, Maxi Cuiabá, Singular Junior, Singular Monteiro Lobato, Singular SBC, Singular SCS, Cassiano Ricardo, Carlos Chagas, Bom Jesus Santo Antônio, Bom Jesus Centro, Bom Jesus Lourdes, Bom Jesus Aldeia, Bom Jesus Divina Providência, Fênix, Drummond, Emilio Ribas, Mackenzie, 7 de Setembro, Objetivo Porto Velho, High School Serviços Educacionais LTDA.[5]

Accreditation

TTUISD is accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Courses and credit by exams (CBEs) are aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).[4]

Notable Students

TTUISD serves a variety of people including actors, singers, dancers, athletes, military families, families who travel often, non-traditional students, families living overseas, homeschool families, adults finishing high school, hospital/homebound students, students struggling in traditional school and anyone looking for an accredited school without attending a physical location.

Notable students include: Actors Jesse Plemons, who plays Landry Clark on the television show Friday Night Lights, and Hunter Parrish are notable graduates of the school as is Olympic speed skater Jordan Malone.[6][7][8] Leven Rambin (All My Children, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) was enrolled and scheduled to graduate in 2008.[9] Disney actress Sarah LeMaire from the television show Wannabes was also a student at TTUISD.[10]
