Thad Altman (born September 8, 1955 in Macon, Georgia) is a Republican member of the Florida Senate, representing the 16th district, which includes parts of Brevard and Indian River Counties since 2012.

Early life

Altman moved to Florida in 1957, and later attended Palm Beach Community College, Brevard Community College, the University of Houston, the Florida Institute of Technology, and Rollins College, and he graduated from Brevard Community College and Rollins College.

Politics

From 1984-1992, Altman served on the Brevard County Commission. When incumbent State Representative Mike Haridopolos was elected to the Florida Senate in a special election in 2003, Altman ran to succeed him, and defeated Libertarian candidate Bruce Wechsler. In 2004, he was re-elected against Shirley Bradshaw, the Democratic nominee, and was re-elected in 2006 without opposition.

When incumbent State Senator Bill Posey ran for Congress in 2008, Altman won his party's nomination to succeed Posey in the 24th District, which included parts of Brevard, Orange and Seminole counties. He faced Kendall Moore, a former Rockledge City Councilman, an unsuccessful candidate for the Brevard County Commission, and the Democratic nominee. In the general election, Altman defeated Moore in a landslide, winning 59% of the vote. He ran for re-election in 2010, and defeated Robert Carmichael in the Republican, and in the general election, he defeated independent candidate Steven Edmonds with 67% of the vote.

When Florida Senate districts were reconfigured, Altman was drawn into the 16th District, and he won his party's nomination unopposed. In the general election, he faced off against Dominic Fallo, the Democratic nominee. He was endorsed by the editorial board of the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, which praised Altman's decision to "[oppose] Governor Rick Scott's decision to reject $2.4 billion from the Obama administration for the proposed high-speed rail between Tampa and Orlando."[1]

Professional life

Altman currently serves as President and CEO of the Astronauts Memorial Foundation.[13] He is also a Florida Certified Building Contractor.[14]
