Development and Filming

The starting line of this season took place at Gas Works Park in Seattle, Washington.

The Amazing Race 10 spanned 40,000 miles (64,000 km) and covered 4 continents and 13 countries, making this the season with the most number of countries visited. Amongst them, 6 were previously unvisited countries, including Mongolia, Kuwait, Mauritius, Madagascar, Finland and Ukraine. None of those countries have been visited since. It was also the first season to (nearly) circumnavigate the globe in a generally westwardly fashion, crossing the Pacific Ocean in the first leg and crossing the Atlantic on the final leg. Most other seasons transversed the globe in a generally eastwardly direction.

The Amazing Race 10 saw the show's very first double elimination when in one leg, it eliminated 2 teams: one halfway through the leg, and the other at the end. It also introduced a new race marker: the Intersection. It involved having two teams work together for all future tasks until otherwise instructed. If no other team was available when one team read the Intersection clue, they were required to wait for another team to show up before proceeding. The Intersection was also shown in conjunction with a Fast Forward, with the first team pairing to win to earn the Fast Forward for both teams.

Additionally, the penalty for coming in last on a non-elimination leg was also changed. Instead of being stripped of money and possessions, the last place team was "Marked for Elimination". This means that at the following leg, they need to check in first at the Pit Stop or else they will be issued a 30-minute penalty at the mat, possibly allowing teams trailing behind them to overtake them in the final placings for that leg.

During the Vietnam legs, all route markers were colored yellow and white rather than red and yellow so as to avoid confusion with the flag of the former independent state of South Vietnam; these were also the original route markers in season 1. The 2nd Vietnamese leg was also the first time in race history in which teams received race money in local currency.

Episode 4 which contained Leg 4 was selected by CBS for The Amazing Race nomination in the 2007 Emmy Awards,[1] and garnered five total nominations, including one for the Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. The episode won the latter award, winning for the show its fifth Outstanding Reality-Competition Award in a row.

Cast

Applications were accepted through January 20, 2006 (one week later than the original deadline). Semi-finalist interviews occurred in late February/early March, followed by finalist interviews in Los Angeles during late March and early April. Filming ran from May 27, 2006 to June 24, 2006.

The cast of The Amazing Race 10 was increased to 12 teams for the first time since Season 4. It included best friends, a couple, college cheerleaders, boyfriends, brothers, a team member with a prosthetic leg, recovered drug addicts, beauty pageant queens, and a pair of single mothers.

Lyn and Karlyn made history by becoming the first all-female team to make the final 3.

Dustin and Kandice along with David and Mary were selected to race in The Amazing Race All-Stars among a cast of returning teams from seasons 1 – 10. David and Mary also appeared on The View where they received gifts from the show, including vacations, a Ford Explorer, and a new house.[2] Jamie was later crowned Miss South Carolina USA 2008, and competed in the Miss USA Pageant in Las Vegas on April 11, 2008.[3]

While Peter & Sarah were portrayed as a newly dating and bickering couple on the race (to the extent that Sarah "broke up" with Peter during their elimination in Kuwait), Sarah revealed that they were friends whose "dating" was non-existent and created to give them an interesting storyline.[4]

  • A red team placement indicates that the team was eliminated.
  • An underlined blue team's placement indicates that the team came in last on a non-elimination leg of the race and was "Marked for Elimination"; if the team did not finish 1st on the next leg, they would receive a 30-minute penalty.
  • A green ƒ indicates that the team won a Fast Forward clue.
  • Matching colored symbols (pink +, brown ^, and magenta ~) indicate teams who worked together during part of the leg as a result of an Intersection.
  • A yellow > means that team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it; <> indicates a leg where the Yield was available but not used.
  1. ^ Bilal & Sa'eed were the last team to arrive at the Meridian Gate in Forbidden City and were eliminated as per the provisions were given at the start of the race (see below).
  2. ^ Kellie took, but failed to complete, the Roadblock in Leg 2. Already in last, Kellie & Jamie then checked into the Pit Stop, without issuing a 4-hour penalty because they came in last place and were eliminated.
  3. ^ Tom & Terry initially arrived 2nd, but were issued a 30-minute penalty for traveling on motorcycles, which had been specifically prohibited for safety reasons. As Tom & Terry were waiting out their penalty, Tyler & James, Rob & Kimberly, Dustin & Kandice, Peter & Sarah, Lyn & Karlyn, and David & Mary checked in, dropping Tom & Terry to 8th.
  4. ^ Because David & Mary finished 1st, their 30-minute "marked for elimination" penalty was nullified.
  5. ^ During the leg, Peter & Sarah had fallen so far behind that all the other teams had already checked into the Pit Stop before Peter & Sarah even arrived at the Detour. When they finally found their next Route Marker at Souk Sulabiya, instead of performing the Detour, Peter & Sarah were instructed to go directly to the Pit Stop, where they were eliminated.
  6. ^ Leg 7 featured an unaired Roadblock. It is unknown who completed the Roadblock from Erwin & Godwin and David & Mary.[5]
  7. ^ Due to an Intersection, Tyler & James and Rob & Kimberly were able to work together to complete the Fast Forward, thus both teams were able to skip all remaining tasks and head directly to the Pit Stop.
  8. ^ David & Mary initially arrived 5th, but were issued a 30-minute penalty for being "marked for elimination" and not arriving 1st. As David & Mary were waiting out their penalty, Lyn & Karlyn checked in, dropping David & Mary to last place and eliminating them.
  9. ^ Leg 9 was double-length, with two Detours and two Roadblocks, shown over two episodes. The placements listed in the first column reflect the order teams arrived at the leg's halfway point.
  10. ^ Dustin & Kandice had been "marked for elimination;" however, since Dustin & Kandice arrived at the Pit Stop in last place, they were eliminated without the 30-minute penalty being issued.
