The Flash is an American television series developed by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns, airing on The CW. It is based on the DC Comics character Barry Allen / Flash, a costumed crimefighter with the power to move at superhuman speeds. It is a spin-off from Arrow, existing in the same fictional universe. The series follows Barry Allen, portrayed by Grant Gustin, a crime scene investigator who gains superhuman speed, which he uses to fight criminals, including others who have also gained superhuman abilities.

The Flash was renewed in March 2016 for a third season,[1] which is scheduled to debut in October 2016.[2] In May, it was revealed that Kevin Smith would return to direct an early episode of the third season.[3] As of May 24, 2016, 46 episodes of The Flash have aired, concluding the second season.

Barry Allen, a forensic crime scene assistant for Central City Police Department, is struck by lightning during a storm that is created after a particle accelerator from S.T.A.R. Labs explodes. In a coma for nine months, Barry awakens in S.T.A.R. Labs, having been placed in the care of Dr. Harrison Wells and his assistants Dr. Caitlin Snow and Cisco Ramon. Barry learns that he can move at extraordinary speeds, and that there were other "metahumans" created from the explosion. One of them, Clyde Mardon, is robbing banks with his ability to control the weather. In order to stop Clyde, Barry is outfitted with a suit, designed by Cisco, that can withstand his high speed. He tracks down Mardon and with Detective Joe West, who learns of Barry's abilities, Barry is able to stop Mardon, who is killed by Joe. With his new powers, Barry vows to find out who killed his mother when he was a child, believing him to be another metahuman who has similar abilities of speed. Elsewhere, in a secret room at S.T.A.R Labs, Wells reveals he is not paraplegic, while reading a newspaper from the future concerning Barry's fate as the Flash.

With help from Cisco, Barry begins using his abilities to stop minor crimes and help citizens across the city. As Barry begins to push himself more and more, he begins to develop debilitating side effects. While assisting Iris West on a school assignment, Barry witnesses a robbery by a crew of men, but faints while trying to stop them. The S.T.A.R. Labs team determines that Barry is becoming hypoglycemic from the use of his abilities due to a sped-up metabolism and needs to ingest more calories to maintain his energy level. The team eventually learns that the robbers are actually one man, Danton Black, who has the ability to create clones of himself. Black wants to kill his former employer Simon Stagg, who stole Black's cloning research. With encouragement from Joe, Barry goes after Black and successfully stops him from killing Stagg. However, Black commits suicide to prevent being captured. Afterward, Barry accepts Joe's help in finding out who really killed Barry's mother. Later, Wells visits Stagg, who has already become obsessed with the Flash after witnessing his powers and plans to exploit them as he did to Black. To protect Barry, Wells kills Stagg.

As the police investigate the murder of one of the city's crime families, Barry suspects that the killer may be a metahuman who can control poison gases. As Barry and Joe work to discover the killer's identity, Dr. Wells and his team work to retrofit the particle accelerator into a prison for metahumans where they can begin to find a way of reversing their mutations. This brings up difficult feelings and memories for Dr. Snow, whose fiancé, Ronnie Raymond, was killed by the explosion. Following another murder, Barry locates the killer, Kyle Nimbus, but is unable to subdue him. Barry discovers that Kyle does not control gases, but transforms his body into them. The team learn that Joe, the lead detective in the original case, is Kyle's next target. Barry races to Iron Heights Prison to save Joe's life. Barry forces Kyle to overexert himself so that he can apprehend him. The team lock Kyle into a custom cell that is able to keep him from escaping. In a flashback to when the accelerator explodes, Dr. Wells is seen going into his hidden room and viewing a surveillance video of Barry getting struck by lightning in his lab.

Dr. Wells begins testing Barry's powers by having him perform multiple tasks at superspeed. In the middle of the tests, a group of men attempt to hijack an armored truck carrying a priceless diamond. Barry races over and stops the crime, as well as identifying Leonard Snart from a set of police mugshots. Felicity Smoak arrives to check on Barry, after learning that he woke from his coma. Happy to see Felicity, Barry introduces her to his friends at S.T.A.R. Labs. To combat the "Streak", Snart acquires stolen tech from S.T.A.R. Labs, which includes a cryonic gun. Cisco reveals to Barry that he created the gun as a fail-safe against Barry should he become a killer like the other metahumans they encountered. Felicity helps the team locate Snart, who sets a trap for Barry. Cisco, Caitlin, and Felicity arrive in time to save Barry, and Snart is able to escape. Later, Snart tracks down his former partner, who has an affinity for fire, and offers him a place by Snart's side taking back Central City from the masked superhero.

A new metahuman with the ability to turn anything she touches into an explosive, Bette Sans Souci, appears in Central City. She is being hunted by General Wade Eiling, and is a former military explosives expert. Barry brings her to S.T.A.R. Labs where the team explains to her that she was changed by the particle accelerator, which bonded bomb shrapnel to her body on a cellular level, but they cannot reverse the process. While the team is away, Dr. Wells convinces Bette to kill Eiling so that he cannot exploit metahumans. Barry races to stop her, but Bette sets off several bombs around Eiling and his men. Eiling kills Bette, and her body turns into a bomb. Barry speeds off with Bette's body and drops it in the river to save the city from the explosion. Eiling visits Dr. Wells, demanding that they work together once again, this time to collect metahumans. Dr. Wells refuses and warns Eiling to never return to S.T.A.R. Labs. In a flashback set five years previously, Dr. Wells tells Eiling he is ending their experiments. After Eiling leaves, Wells walks to a cage and tells Gorilla Grodd that he has plans for him.

Barry confronts the thief, but when he hits him the thief's skin turns to steel and Barry breaks his hand. Barry runs back to the lab before he can be hurt further. The thief is identified as Tony Woodward, Barry's childhood bully. Barry and the team discover Tony's hideout, and Barry rushes in without a plan to defeat him. Tony gets the upper hand again and Barry is beaten up and left to die. Back at the lab, Cisco determines that if Barry can hit Tony at 837 mph at the right angle, then he can create enough force to compromise Tony's metal structure. Tony kidnaps Iris and demands that she write about him. Barry arrives and successfully hits the speed necessary to temporarily disable Tony's abilities. Afterward, Tony is locked away at S.T.A.R. Labs, and Iris renames her hero "The Flash". Meanwhile, Joe is visited by the metahuman that killed Barry's mother, who steals the case file and threatens Joe to drop his investigation.
7 7 "Power Outage" Larry Shaw Alison Schapker & Grainne Godfree November 25, 2014 (2014-11-25) 3J5357 3.47[12]
Dr. Wells returns to his secret room, where it is revealed that he has been documenting Barry's abilities, and using his computer, Gideon, to look at events in the future. Barry arrives at a crime scene where the victim was murdered via electrocution, and charred beyond recognition, suggesting a metahuman was involved. While investigating the victim's identity, the team identifies a power drain in the city. When Barry arrives he is attacked by Farooq Gibran, a man who has the ability to siphon electrical energy. The attack drains Barry of his speed, and Gideon reveals to Wells that there are no references to "The Flash" in the future. Wells believes that Barry's body needs an electrical jumpstart, and Farooq arrives at the lab while the team is helping Barry. The process does not work, but Wells realizes that Barry's problem is psychological. When Farooq catches up to the team and Dr. Wells' life is in danger, Barry overcomes his fear, connects to his speed and stops Farooq. Later, Dr. Wells sees that the timeline is safe, and takes a sample of Farooq's blood to determine how he was able to drain Barry's abilities.

Barry discovers his plan, and agrees with Dr. Wells to not engage Snart in the hope that he goes away and no one gets hurt like the last time. When the Flash fails to show, Snart and Rory, who now has a gun that can emit absolute hot temperatures, kidnap Caitlin to force Barry out of hiding. Cisco and Barry realize that if they can get Snart and Rory to cross the streams of their respective weapons it will cancel the two guns out. The Flash meets Snart and Rory in the city for a showdown, exposing himself to the media. After multiple failed attempts, Barry eventually gets them to cross the streams with Eddie's help, successfully damaging the weapons and disabling the criminal pair. While in transport to Iron Heights Prison, Snart and Rory are broken out by Snart's sister. Meanwhile, Caitlin investigates the cause of Ronnie's transformation.

While home, Dr. Wells receives a threatening call from an unidentified person before using his super speed to move out of the way of his glass ceiling shattering. Wells informs Barry and the team that the caller was Hartley Rathaway, a former protégé. Hartley begins attacking his family's business with sonic blasts, and when Barry arrives to stop him Hartley reveals that he knows the secret Dr. Wells is hiding. Dr. Wells reveals that Hartley warned him that the particle accelerator could explode, but Wells chose to risk it for the rewards. Cisco discovers that Hartley intentionally got caught so he could steal information from S.T.A.R. Labs that would allow him to identify the frequency of Barry's molecules so he can kill him. Barry triggers a trap set by Hartley, which starts shredding Barry's organs. Dr. Wells taps into a satellite and sends an alternative frequency to disable Hartley's weapons. Later, Joe has Eddie start an investigation into Dr. Wells. Hartley, imprisoned back in the particle accelerator, reveals to Cisco that he knows where Ronnie is. In his secret room, Dr. Wells uses the tachyon technology to temporarily recharge his speed force energy.

A woman with the ability to teleport to any location she can see breaks into Iron Heights prison to free her boyfriend, Clay Parker. Barry finds residual DNA particulates all over the scene and when analyzing it at S.T.A.R. Labs the team identifies the woman as Shawna Baez. To help Barry, Henry Allen tracks down leads in Iron Heights and finds out that Clay owed money to a local crime boss, who was also planning a heist. Barry learns the location of the heist, finding Shawna and Clay robbing an armored truck. Barry is able to capture Shawna after removing all the lights in a tunnel, effectively making her unable to teleport without being able to see. Cisco goes to Hartley to find out more about Ronnie; Hartley reveals that Dr. Martin Stein, who developed research into a F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M. project focused on transmuting elements, was at S.T.A.R. Labs the day of the explosion. Hartley reveals that during the explosion Ronnie and Dr. Stein merged, before he escapes Cisco's custody. Knowing that Dr. Stein is in control of Ronnie's body, they use his wife to talk the merged individual into coming back to the lab for testing. Meanwhile, Joe enlists Cisco's help to identify who murdered Barry's mother. Cisco discovers an old mirror left in the former Allen home that captured images from the night of the murder, and Joe finds blood from two people behind some new wallpaper. Joe asks Cisco to compare the blood to Dr. Wells', but Cisco refuses to believe Dr. Wells is involved. Dr. Wells discovers that Ronnie and Dr. Stein's atoms are in conflict, and if it continues they will become nuclear. Dr. Wells determines that a component of the tachyon device recharging his speed could be converted to a quantum splicer to stabilize the body and separate the two personalities. Dr. Snow uses the device; the fused body still goes nuclear, but safely away from the city. The explosion alerts General Eiling, who orders a team to recover "Firestorm". Cisco runs the blood and informs Joe that while neither is from Dr. Wells, one is from an adult Flash.

Cisco returns and reveals that Leonard tortured his brother until Cisco revealed the Flash's true identity. Barry goes after the Snarts, and the two develop a truce: Snart will not reveal Barry's identity, will no longer kill innocent people, and stay away from Barry's friends in exchange for Barry not locking him away in the particle accelerator. The Reverse-Flash kills a local reporter and destroys evidence linking Wells to Simon Stagg's death. The reporter's vanishing causes Barry to think Joe might be right about Dr. Wells.

Dr. Wells coaches Barry on how to vibrate his molecules so that he can phase through objects, which removes the bomb. Afterward, Barry provides an antidote to all the patrons, before capturing the Tricksters. The Flash reveals his identity to Eddie so he can help keep Iris from looking into Dr. Wells for her own protection, as Barry realizes that Wells is the Reverse-Flash. In flashbacks, after failing to kill Barry, the Reverse-Flash escapes only to lose his speed. Gideon informs him that travelling through time has drained his powers. Eobard stalks Dr. Wells and reveals the particle accelerator is not built until 2020. He then kills Wells and steals his appearance and identity so he can develop the particle accelerator sooner and return to his timeline.

The particle accelerator is activated, and the team realizes that Wells has been at S.T.A.R. Labs the entire time, and that he has repaired the accelerator. While investigating, Wells escapes, but the team is able to find and rescue Eddie, who is disillusioned after Wells showed him that Iris marries Barry in the future. Eddie tells Iris what he knows of her future and ends their relationship. Worried that the metahumans imprisoned inside the particle accelerator will be killed when it reaches full power, the team relocates them to the A.R.G.U.S. prison. In order to set up a safe transport, Barry requests Leonard Snart's help. Snart agrees but only after Barry erases Snart's criminal record from the CCPD database. Snart sabotages the transport and allows the metahumans to escape. Wells arrives back at the lab just as the accelerator fully charges. Barry, Firestorm and Oliver all meet outside to fight Wells. They coordinate their efforts; Oliver stops him with a nanite injection that disables Wells' speed and Barry knocks him out.

Ronnie and Professor Stein turn into Firestorm and destroy the singularity, but at the cost of Ronnie's life. Six months later, Barry operates on his own to avoid hurting any more of his friends and family; Cisco works in the police department alongside Joe, and Caitlin works at Mercury Labs. The city holds a ceremony honoring the Flash for his work in saving the city. At the ceremony, Barry is attacked by Al Rothstein whose strength and size manipulation prove too much for Barry to handle. Jay explains to everyone that he is the Flash on a parallel Earth, and that he was in a battle with a demonic speedster named Zoom when the singularity brought him to this Earth without his powers. Dr. Stein explains to the team how Jay's story could be possible using the multiverse theory, describing their world as "Earth-1" and Jay's as "Earth-2". Zoom arrives and brings another metahuman from his Earth named Sand Demon to kill Barry. The two fight, but Sand Demon escapes. Cisco analyzes the "sand" left behind and has a flash of the fight. After Sand Demon kidnaps Officer Patty Spivot, Jay teaches Barry how to hurl lightning from the energy he creates when he runs. Cisco uses his new power to tap into the "sand" particles and find Patty's location. Barry uses the lightning blast to turn Sand Demon's particles to glass. Later, Officer Spivot joins Joe's metahuman task force. Cisco divulges his new ability to Dr. Stein, but asks him not to tell anyone. Dr. Stein and Cisco are able to locate 52 breaches with the other Earth, with the largest one being within S.T.A.R. Labs itself.

Meanwhile, Lisa Snart shows up asking for Flash's help in rescuing her brother Leonard, whom she believes was kidnapped. Barry tracks down Leonard, who reveals that he was not kidnapped but is working with his father, Lewis. Lisa swears that Leonard would never work with their father willingly, because their father was abusive toward her when she was a child. Eventually, the team determines that Lewis placed a bomb inside of Lisa and threatened to kill her if Leonard did not help him steal some diamonds. Barry infiltrates Lewis' crew with assistance from Leonard. Cisco successfully removes the bomb from Lisa, so Leonard uses his cold gun to kill his father in retaliation. Dr. Stein's condition continues to deteriorate, and Earth-2's Dr. Harrison Wells arrives through the singularity breach at the lab.

The team is able to stabilize Dr. Stein, but only for a short period of time. Caitlin identifies two potential candidates to be viable partners for the Firestorm matrix: a scientist named Henry Hewitt and a former high school football star named Jefferson "Jax" Jackson. Hewitt is excited to merge with Stein, but the attempt fails and Hewitt leaves angrily, not knowing that his own metahuman powers have been activated. Jefferson initially refuses, but when Hewitt goes on the attack with his new abilities Jefferson agrees to merge with Dr. Stein. After the successful merge, the new Firestorm joins Barry in helping to take down Hewitt, forcing Hewitt to get angrier until he burns himself out. Before departing with Jefferson, Dr. Stein encourages Cisco to tell the others about his powers. Meanwhile, Dr. Wells breaks into Mercury Labs and steals an unknown device. Later, Barry is attacked by a humanoid shark monster sent by Zoom to kill the Flash, but he is saved when Dr. Wells uses the device to incapacitate the creature.

Despite his attitude, Wells plans to help Barry's team stop Zoom and his metahumans. At the same time, a thief from Earth-2 named Doctor Light arrives and starts robbing banks. Jay tells Barry that she can be reasoned with, and it works until Barry recognizes her as the Earth-2 version of Linda Park. Later, Light attempts to kill Linda and take over her life, but accidentally kills Linda's boss and is foiled by Barry's team in the process. Wells reveals Cisco's metahuman powers to the team, which Cisco uses to locate Doctor Light. Barry defeats her using a speed mirage technique that was suggested by Wells. After locking Light up, they plan to use her to lure Zoom out and defeat him for good. Jay, who does not trust Wells, thinks it is too dangerous and leaves the team. Back on Earth-2, it is revealed that Zoom has Wells' daughter captive.

Instead, her Earth-1 counterpart, Linda Park, agrees to help the team by impersonating Doctor Light. Dr. Wells creates a speed dampening serum and the team stages a fight at one of the breaches in order to trick Zoom through. The attempt fails, as Zoom knew what they were attempting. Instead, he goes after Linda, before fighting Barry. Zoom is much faster and easily bests Barry, showing his defeated, unconscious body to the local news and the police station before ultimately returning to S.T.A.R. Labs. Zoom stabs Barry with his hand, but Cisco shoots him with the serum, which hurts Zoom, but still leaves him with enough speed to escape. Later, Wells reveals that Zoom has his daughter Jesse and that he came to Earth-1 to stop Zoom. Barry wakes from his injuries and discovers that he can no longer feel his legs.

While they are at a club, another speedster shows up and robs everyone before escaping. A Mercury Labs employee, Eliza Harmon, turns out to be the speedster, who developed Velocity-9 from samples Caitlin gave her to help with Jay's illness. Operating under the name "Trajectory", she invades S.T.A.R. Labs, imprisons Barry, and demands more V-9. After she threatens Jesse's life, Dr. Wells and Caitlin make more of the drug for Eliza, who then speeds off to wreak havoc on the city. Barry tracks her down and tries to talk Eliza into giving up. She refuses and injects more V-9 into her system before speeding off. Barry watches as Eliza's speed becomes so intense that her lightning turns blue and she disintegrates. Meanwhile, Jesse decides to leave the city to experience the world on her own. Based on what Barry saw from the overuse of V-9, the similarities between Zoom's speed and Jay's sickness, and Cisco's "vibe", the team concludes that Jay is Zoom.

However, after a Time Wraith follows Barry to the past, Eobard deduces Barry's deception. Barry is able to convince Eobard that his plan succeeds in the future, but that in order to maintain it, he must help Barry become faster. The wraith comes to the lab, where Caitlin and Cisco are forced to accept help from Hartley to deter the wraith. Afterward, the Barry from the current time arrives, forcing an explanation of the time travel event. Eobard provides the future Barry with the information needed to solve the formula, so that he can return to his time. Before he leaves, Barry tells Caitlin and Cisco to find a way to stop the wraith. As Barry prepares to make the jump through time, the wraith arrives, which forces the past timeline's Barry to intervene, so that his future self can return. Years earlier on Earth-2, a young Hunter Zolomon watches as his father murders his mother and is subsequently sent to the local orphanage. In present day, Barry tests the tachyon accelerator and is able to enhance his speed four times greater than normal. Barry decides to re-open a breach back to Earth-2, and he believes that Cisco's powers are the key to opening the portals. Meanwhile, Wells recounts how the particle accelerator explosion on his Earth created Zoom. Zolomon was a convicted serial killer as an adult, who was receiving electroconvulsive therapy during the explosion, during which he received his powers. Cisco opens a breach and Zoom immediately comes through, chasing Barry back to S.T.A.R. Labs. There, Barry uses images of Zoom's parents as a distraction to trap him, but Zoom manages to escape, claiming to be "the darkness". Zoom kidnaps Wally and demands Barry's speed in exchange for Wally's life. Barry agrees, so Wells siphons all of his speed force, leaving Barry powerless. Zoom injects the speed force into himself, and he kidnaps Caitlin with his enhanced speed, before escaping.

Grey has superhuman strength, but he is also aging rapidly. Barry discovers that when Grey uses his super strength, he accelerates the aging process. Barry, Joe, and Cisco manipulate Grey into exerting his powers until he ages and dies as a weak, old man; his body then reverts back to its 18-year-old self. To fight Zoom, Wells offers to recreate the circumstances that gave Barry his speed. On Earth-2, Hunter tells Caitlin that he kidnapped her because he is in love with her. Caitlin encounters her doppelgänger, Killer Frost, who was captured by Zoom. Frost convinces Caitlin to help her escape, but then attempts to kill her. Zoom arrives and kills Frost, then warns Caitlin not to free the man in the iron mask. Barry goes to his father, Henry, for advice, who returns with him back to Central City. Henry argues with Wells over his procedure for returning Barry's powers, concerned for his son's safety. Zoom and Caitlin arrive back on Earth-1, with Zoom declaring the city under his control. The Earth-2 version of Dante Ramon, "Rupture", arrives on Earth-1 looking to kill Cisco for killing his Earth-2 brother. Zoom sends Rupture after the police to send the city a message. Barry and the police stop Rupture, but Zoom arrives and kills the officers himself, and Rupture for failing. He then publicly announces the Flash's disappearance. Realizing that he cannot stop Zoom without his powers, Barry agrees to Wells' plan. During the process, Barry is seemingly vaporized, while Jesse and Wally are caught in the blast.

Barry wakes up in his own bedroom and finds "Joe" downstairs. "Joe" explains what he really is: a physical manifestation of the Speed Force. "Joe" informs Barry that he cannot leave unless he catches a mysterious moving figure. Cisco and Wells create a path into the Speed Force so Barry can escape, but Barry chooses to remain so he can earn his powers back. As he pursues the figure, other Speed Force entities challenge Barry on what it means to be a hero, and how he cannot become the Flash again until he finally accepts his mother's death. Barry shares a moment with his "mother", which allows him to finally catch the moving figure—himself. His powers restored, and with help from Cisco and Iris, Barry returns to S.T.A.R. Labs to save the team from the reanimated corpse of Tony Woodward. Afterwards, Barry uses speed force energy to bring Jesse out of her coma. Wells realizes that Zoom stole a magnetar from Mercury Labs that will allow him to destroy every world in the multiverse if he and Barry can create enough energy from their race to power the device. When Barry refuses to back out, the team locks him in a containment cell for his own protection. The team develops their own successful plan to send Zoom back to Earth-2, but Joe is pulled in with him. On Earth-2, Zoom reveals to Joe that the man in the iron mask is the real Jay Garrick. Wally releases Barry to rescue Joe. Barry agrees to race Zoom if he returns Joe unharmed. As Barry and Zoom race, the magnatar begins to charge. However, Barry creates a time remnant of himself, who gives his life to stop the magnatar, while Barry takes out Zoom. Defeated, Zoom is then taken away by the Time Wraiths. The true Jay Garrick is revealed to be Henry's doppelganger, which distresses Barry. Wells and Jesse return with Jay to Earth-2. Still feeling broken and defeated, Barry travels back in time and stops the Reverse-Flash from killing his mother.
