The Michener Institute, more formally The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences, is a post-secondary institution in Toronto, Ontario, that educates applied health science professionals.

History

The Michener Institute was founded by Dr. Diana Schatz under the name the Toronto Institute of Medical Technology. In 1958 the value of combining learning in an educational environment with clinical education in a teaching hospital was demonstrated by pilot program developed by hospital-based physicians and medical technologists. In 1990 the name was changed to The Michener Institute in honour of Roland Michener, the 20th Canadian Governor General. In 2008, The Michener Institute celebrated 50 years in applied health science education.

Mission

The mission of The Michener Institute is to advance applied health sciences and associated professionals in order to enhance the health of individuals and communities in Ontario and beyond. The vision is to be a centre of excellence for the advancement of applied health sciences education.

The Michener Institute has 17 full-time programs and many more continuing education programs. Some of Michener's full-time programs include: Anesthesia Assistant, Chiropody, Genetics Technology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nuclear Medicine and Respiratory Therapy. The postgraduate programs are Graduate Certificate in Health Science, Graduate Diploma in Health Science, Graduate Advanced Diploma in Health Science. Bachelor's Degree available through joint programs with The University of Toronto (Medical Radiation Sciences), Laurentian University (Radiation Therapy) and Dalhousie University (Respiratory Therapy).
