The Scientist is a professional magazine intended for life scientists. Coverage includes articles on recently published research papers, current research, techniques, important career news, profiles of established and up and coming scientists, publishing, research integrity and best practices, as well as other columns and reports of interest to its readers.

The editor-in-chief is Bob Grant.

History

The Scientist was founded by Eugene Garfield in 1986.[1] The magazine is published monthly and is available in print and digital formats.[2] Its closure was announced in October 2011,[3][4] but then the LabX Media Group announced its intent to purchase and continue publishing it.[5][6] The Group officially acquired the magazine at the end of October 2011.[7]

Top 10 Innovations Survey

Since 2008,[8] The Scientist has conferred awards for the top innovations in science technology: Nominations are submitted; entries are reviewed by a panel of judges; and the winners are announced annually in the December edition of the magazine.

The Scientist offers a website that complements the print version by offering live science news and multimedia features, attracting roughly 1.2 million unique page views each month, according to Google Analytics.


Social media

In 2011, The Scientist launched a Facebook page to deliver its content in the social media realm. The page now has more than 2 million page likes[9] and fosters a highly engaged community of readers.

Since then, The Scientist has launched special interest Facebook pages to share the latest research developments in different life science topics In December 2018, it was announced that some pages would be renamed and refocused for a more cohesive community.[10] These pages boast a combined viewership of more than 1.6 million page views and are known as:

  • The Cancer Scientist[11]
    • Covers cancer research, funding, policy, translational medicine, model organism husbandry, drug discovery, clinical trial news, and more.
  • The Cannabis Scientist[12]
    • Covers cannabis research, techniques, policy, funding, clinical trials, and more.
  • The Cell Scientist[13]
    • Covers stem cells, metabolic and genetic disease, cell function and communication, regenerative science, bioethics, policy, and more.
  • The EnviroScientist[14]
    • Covers ecology, conservation, environmental policy, climate change, plant science, zoology, and more.
  • The Genome Scientist[15]
    • Covers genetics, genomics, GMO policy, lab techniques, gene editing, gene therapy, molecular biology, and more.
  • The Micro Scientist [16]
    • Covers immunology, epidemiology, microscopy, policy, drug discovery, medications, hormones, and more.
  • The NeuroScientist[17]
    • Covers neuroscience, neurodegenerative disease, paralysis, funding, policy, clinical trials, and more.
  • The Scientist Careers[18]
