Tiruchirappalli has a well-developed transport infrastructure. Being located almost at the geographic centre of the state Tamil Nadu India, Trichy is well connected by Road, Rail and Air with most cities and towns in India but waterways through sea is not possible.

The national highways NH 45, NH 45B, NH 67, NH 210 and NH 227 pass through the city. Tiruchirappalli forms a part of the Division which is headquartered at Kumbakonam.[1] There are regular buses to Thanjavur,[2] Kanniyakumari,[2] Chennai,[2] Madurai,[2] Salem, Palani,[2] Puducherry,[3] Coimbatore,[2] Kodaikanal[2] and Tirupathi.[2] Buses are also available to destinations in Karnataka and Kerala. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates special bus services between Bengaluru and Tiruchirapalli on weekends.[4] There are two major bus termini: the Chatram Bus Stand and the Central Bus Station,[2] both situated close to each other.[3] The bus termini are situated at a distance of 1 kilometre from the main railway station.[2] The city also has an efficient local bus transportation system - both government-operated as well as private.[3]

  • NH-45: Chennai - Tambaram - Tindivanam - Villupuram - Trichy - Manapparai - Dindigul- Periyakulam - Theni.
  • NH-67: Nagapattinam - Tiruvarur - Thanjavur - Tiruchirappalli - Karur - Coimbatore - Ooty - Gundalpet (Intersection of NH-212 in Karnataka).
  • NH-210: Trichy - Keeranur - Pudukottai - Thirumayam - Kanadukathan - Karaikkudi - Devakottai - Tiruvadanai - R.S.Mangalam - Devipattinam (Intersection of East Coast Road (ECR)).
  • NH-227:Trichy - Lalgudi - Pullambadi - Paluvur - Udayarpalayam - Jayankondam - Jayamkodacholapuram - Chidambaram.

Trichy is one of the divisions in Southern Railway. Trichy Railway Junction has five branches which connects to Kaniyakumari, Erode, Rameshwaram, Karaikal and Chennai. Trichy is one of the busiest Railway Junction in Tamil Nadu. Tiruchirappalli is an important railway junction in central Tamil Nadu and constitutes a separate division of the Southern Railway.[5] There are frequent trains to Chennai, Coimbatore, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal, Chidambaram, Madurai, Tirupathi, Tuticorin, Tenkasi, Kollam, Rameswaram, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kochi, Kanyakumari, Mangaluru, Kolkata, Guwahati.[6] About nine express trains operate daily on the Chord line, important among are Vaigai express, Pallavan Express and the Rockfort Express.[7] The Mysuru Express plies between Tiruchirappalli and Mysuru on a daily basis, stopping at Salem and Bengaluru on the way.[7] Tiruchirappalli has rail connectivity with most important cities and towns in India.[8]

Tiruchirapalli International Airport or Trichy International Airport (IATA: TRZ, ICAO: VOTR) is a major airport mostly serving Tiruchirapalli and adjacent districts in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The airport, located on the NH 210 Tiruchirapalli - Rameswaram highway, is 5 km (3.1 mi)[9] south of the city centre.

The Tiruchirapalli International Airport is the second biggest airport in Tamil Nadu after Chennai International Airport. It was first used to handle air traffic in 1938 when Tata Airlines commercial flights stopped at Tiruchirappalli on the Karachi-Colombo route.[10] In 1948, Air Ceylon commenced daily passenger flights between Tiruchirappalli and Colombo via Jaffna.[11][12] There are regular flights to Chennai,[7] Sri Lanka,[13] and Dubai.[14] Air India Express has an engineering stores complex at Tiruchirapalli International Airport for repairing aircraft.[15]

The Trichy Airport is scheduled for expansion soon as the local government has bought land in and around the existing airport. This expansion is expected to accommodate larger flights and also expand the International operations to more countries given Trichy is an integral industrial hub in Tamil Nadu. The airport is expected to support frequent flyers from regional districts surrounding Trichy which includes "Trichy, Karur, Namakkal, Madurai, Erode, Pudukkottai and Thanjavur". In Nov 2011, The Trichy Airport opened up the International air cargo, which was built at the cost of Rs. 1 crore.[16]
