Something Something... Unakkum Enakkum (English: Something Something... Between you and me) is a 2006 Tamil-language romantic drama film directed by M. Raja. It stars Jayam Ravi and Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles and a huge star-cast, including Richa Pallod, veterans Prabhu, Bhagyaraj, Geetha and comedians Santhanam and Ganja Karuppu in supporting roles. The film is a remake of the 2005 Telugu blockbuster, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana starring Siddharth, Trisha Krishnan, Srihari, and Prakash Raj. The film was also remade in Oriya under the name Suna Chadhei Mo Rupa Chadhei and copied in Bengali as I Love You. The film's score and soundtrack was composed by Devi Sri Prasad, who also scored the music in the original version of the film, whilst cinematography was handled by A. Venkatesh and editing by S.SurajKavee. The film was remade in Hindi as Ramaiya Vastavaiya which was released on 19 July 2013.[1] The film was initially released with prefixes "Something Something" later the film was released only as "Unakkum Enakkum" due to rule imposed by Government that titles of Tamil films should be named only in Tamil for tax exemption.[2]

Plot

Santhosh (Jayam Ravi) is a rich, city boy, born to billionaire parents and brought up in London. On the other hand, Kavitha (Trisha)is a traditional, simple desi girl from Tamilnadu who is brought up by her only brother, Muthupandi (Prabhu). He is heartbroken when their father marries another woman and throws them out of the house, humiliating them on the way. Their mother dies and her tomb is built on the small land which they own until the zamindar tells them that it is his land, since their mother had taken a loan from the man. Muthupandi volunteers to work day and night, to pay off the loan as long as they don't tear down his mother's tomb. The Zamindar agrees and the local station master helps them. Slowly Muthupandi and Kavitha grow up. One day, Lalitha, Kavitha's best friend, comes to their house to invite Kavitha to their house as she is getting married. Lalitha's cousin, Santhosh also arrives on the same day with his mother, Janaki (Geetha).

Slowly Santhosh and Kavitha fall in love but Santhosh's mother does not bear it as Kavitha is not as rich as them, and is thus not to their standards; Santosh is also to be married to Janaki's brother's business partner's daughter, Shalini. Janaki humiliates Kavitha as well as Muthupandi, who arrives a minute before, and both are thrown of the house after Janaki accuses them of trying to entice and trap Santhosh. When Santhosh learns of this, he goes to Kavitha's house and pleads to her brother to accept him. Muthupandi gives him a chance, just like he was given a chance by the Zamindar when he was little. Santhosh is tasked to take care of the cows, clean up after them and grow more crops than Muthupandi by the end of the season; if he does not, Santhosh will be thrown out of the village and can never see Kavitha again. The Zamindar and his son is not happy as the Zamindar's son wanted to marry Kavitha. With them and Shalini and her father trying to get Santhosh to lose the competition, Santhosh has to work hard for his love, eating red chillies and rice everyday, even though he can't bear it. Through many antics from the Zamindar's side and Shalini's side, Santhosh eventually proves his love for Siri to Muthupandi, and succeeds in growing more grains. However, Zamindar & his son kidnap Kavitha and then later tries to rape her. A fight takes place in which Santhosh kills the Zamindar's son. Muthupandi, after realizing that Santhosh and Kavitha should be together, takes the blame for this and spends 5 years in prison. The movie ends with Muthupandi's release from prison which is also when Kavitha and Santhosh get married, in everyone's presence. Janaki then accepts Kavitha to be her daughter-in-law.

Box office

  • The film was a commercial success grossing $10 million at the box office.[citation needed]
  • The common factor between Jayam Ravi's earlier films, Jayam, M. Kumaran son of Mahalakshmi and Something Something... Unakkum Enakkum is that all three movies are produced by his father,Mohan and they are all remakes of Telugu hits. Coincidentally, the heriones in these films all acted in the original Telugu versions.
  • This is Jayam Ravi's first film opposite a well-established actress, Trisha Krishnan. Previously he has only acted with newcomers like Sadha, Renuka Menon, Shriya Saran, Kamna Jethmalani, and Asin Thottumkal.
  • To shoot the village scenes, 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land at the base of a hill were leased at Kudiraikulipatipallam near Aathur and converted into a farm. The song sequences were shot in Chennai as well as London.
  • Parthiban and Sarath Kumar were offered the role of Muthupandi. Finally, Prabhu Ganesan agreed to do the role which earned him praise.
