The University of Science and Technology – Houari Boumediene (French: Université des sciences et de la technologie Houari-Boumediene, USTHB, Arabic: جامعة العلوم والتكنولوجيا هواري بومدين‎‎) is a university located in the town of Bab-Ezzouar 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Algiers, Algeria. The university was designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and was inaugurated in 1974.

Courses offered include Computing, Pure and Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Civil Engineering, Electronics, Information Technology, Process Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. USTHB was the largest university in Algeria until 2013; it has over 20,000 students. The government five-year plan aiming at raising the number of university students in Algeria from 1.2 million in 2010 to 2 million students in 2014 has led to the construction of new universities and faculties in almost every Algerian town; some universities are now larger than the USTHB in the number of enrolled student. The USTHB has all the facilities required in modern university. The USTHB collaborate tightly with western universities, especially with French universities, agreements exist between the faculties and their counterpart in France, Quebec Canada and other countries for the purpose of training and research. A number of Arab and African student receive grants to study in the USTHB. All the programs are provided in French language, except for the Geography curriculum that is provided in Arabic language.

Sports

In term of sports, the USTHB has a martial arts club run by volunteers, an agreement with the Olympic complex for the use of the Olympic swimming pool by the university students, it has a football team, and the USTHB basketball team participated in the National Collegiate Athletic competition.

Student life

The USTHB provides a vibrant student life, a number art clubs and scientific clubs are active in the university, sports tournaments, martial art exhibitions, art expositions and music festivals are organised frequently inside the campus. The large number of student unions represent the students in their diversity and actively participate in campus life. Despite their diversity, the student unions in USTHB collaborate tightly when it comes to negotiating student rights with the rectorate or with the government.

Services, cost of Living: USTHB has canteens that provides modest hot meals at lunch time for a very symbolic price (1 dinar and 2 cents, USTHB has a medical center, a mosque, a medical center, student dorms. A number of kiosks, shops exist on the campus and provide the students with their needs. At least 4 student dorms exist,within or in the vicinity of the campus, two student dorms are for female students and two dorms for male students. Mixity in the campus and classes is not an issue. The student dorms however are separated by sex and access is allowed in out at any time of day or night for occupants only. Every student dorm has a subsided canteen that offers hot meals 3 times a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Every campus has common area for student to socialise and relax. The student housing excludes couples, and student with parents house located within a 20 km radius of the USTHB campus. The student accommodation is offered for a subsided fee of around 2000 Algerian dinars the academic year. (less than 300 US dollars a year). All USHB students receive a student allowance paid 4 times a year, once every three months, the amount is few thousands Algerian dinars every three months depending on parents income.

Transportation

A well developed student buses network runs between 06h00 and 20h00, dedicated to students only, it links all student dorms, faculties and universities in Algiers and beyond to universities in nearby towns. The Algiers suburb train and the Algiers tramway system have stops at the USTHB. The transportation is subsided for student 45 Algerian dinars for three months of unrestricted use of the student buses network and the state owned public transportation network including train, tramway and ETUSA buses. The privately owned buses have stops near the university campus, they however, are not subsided, they cost 15 to 25 dinars per trip depending on the distance.

Ranking

In 2010, according to University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP),[2] it is the best university in Algeria .
