Professor Veronica van Heyningen CBE FRS FMedSci (née Daniel, born 12 November 1946) is a British geneticist who specialises in the etiology of anophthalmia. She was head of medical genetics at the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh and the president of The Genetics Society.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

Education

van Heyningen studied Natural Sciences (genetics) at the University of Cambridge, and at Northwestern University. She went to study for a DPhil[14] at the University of Oxford in early gene mapping studies using somatic cell hybrids, with Walter Bodmer.[15][16]

Awards and honours

She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2010 Birthday Honours.[17]

Personal life

In 1968 she married Simon van Heyningen.[1] She was interviewed on BBC Radio 4's "The Life Scientific" in 2014.[18]
