WRXR-FM (105.5 FM) is a commercial radio station licensed to Rossville, Georgia, USA, broadcasting to the Chattanooga, Tennessee, area. WRXR broadcasts an active rock music format branded as "Rock 105". WRXR was the second station in Chattanooga to start broadcasting in HD radio. Previously the call letters were used for a classic rock station in Chicago. That station became smooth jazz WNUA.

History

The station was originally known as WOWE and played rock and heavy metal music under the name "Rock 105". The station changed call letters to WLMX in December 1986 and went under the name "Lite Mix 105". "Lite Mix 105" was home to Bill Burkett and Parker Smith in the morning during the station's early years. Bill, a Chattanooga radio veteran had worked at stations such as WDOD and WGOW before coming to "Lite Mix 105" in 1986. He was billed the nicest guy in Chattanooga radio. Parker Smith on the other hand was just the opposite, he was crude,outspoken and sometimes controversial. Parker specialized in those "did he really say that?" kind of moments. As of 2011 both Bill and Parker are now deceased. Before moving to WDEF-FM in the early 1990s, Danny Howard worked at WLMX "Lite Mix 105", a gold-based adult contemporary station.[1] A few other current WDEF-FM personalitys also worked at "Lite Mix 105" such as, Robin Daniels and Patti Sanders, (who also worked at WOWE).

On September 15, 1999, Cumulus Broadcasting changed WLMX back to "Rock 105, The Rock of Chattanooga". Sammy George, Cumulus market manager, described the new active rock format as "radio with an attitude." Artists included Metallica, Pearl Jam, AC/DC and Nirvana. Programming also included NASCAR and Lex and Terry in the morning.[citation needed] The other Cumulus stations at that time were WUSY, WKXJ, WLOV, and WLMX-AM.[2][3]
