Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW) is a Washington State Department of Corrections women's prison located in Gig Harbor, Washington.[1] With an operating capacity of 740, it is the largest women's prison in the state [2] and is surrounded by Washington State Route 16, and McCormick forest park. It opened 53 years ago in 1971, eighty-two years after statehood.[1]

Facilities and Programs

Washington Corrections Center for Women facilitates Educational and Offender Change programs, & Work and Vocational programs.

  • Educational and Offender Change programs include: GED programs, Information Technology programs, and a prison library.[3] they're intent is to teach incarcerated new skills, and help them to transition into the outside world.
  • Work and Vocational programs include: CAD programming, Textile Production, and Braille printing.[4] these are how prisoners earn prison salaries or commissary.

History

Washington Corrections Center for Women was opened 53 years ago, in 1971, making it the oldest women's prison in the state of Washington.[1] In April, 2016 John Legend performed at Washington Corrections Center for Women to raise awareness for his "Free America" campaign to reduce mass incarceration in the united states.[7]

Notable inmates

Mary Kay Letourneau former school teacher known for her romantic relations with a 6th grade student.[8]
