Willie Lee Broughton (born September 9, 1964) is a former American football defensive tackle in the National Football League for the Indianapolis Colts, Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Raiders, and the New Orleans Saints. He played college football at the University of Miami.

Early years

Broughton attended Fort Pierce Central High School, before moving on to the University of Miami. As a senior he played every position along the defensive line.

Professional career

Indianapolis Colts

Broughton was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round (88th overall) of the 1985 NFL Draft. He was also selected in the 1985 USFL Territorial Draft by the Orlando Renegades.

In his second season he started 8 games at nose tackle, after the team released veteran Brad White.

Broughton was signed as a free agent on July 5, 1988,[1] and waived on August 23.[2]

Dallas Cowboys

In 1989, his college coach Jimmy Johnson gave him a tryout and ended up starting 14 games, while registering 90 tackles, 3 sacks and 2 passes defensed. The next year, he only played in 4 games after suffering a back injury. He was cut on August 19, 1991.[3]

Los Angeles Raiders

Broughton spent a year out of football rehabilitating his back, before being signed as a free agent by the Oakland Raiders in 1992 and starting 8 games at left defensive tackle during the season.[4]

He was released on August 30, 1993.[5] He did not play in 1994, after dislocating hid right elbow in a preseason drill. On August 29, 1995, he was traded to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a draft choice.[6]

New Orleans Saints

In 1995, he started 10 games at left defensive tackle. He was placed on the injured reserve list on December 19, 1996.[7] He was cut on July 18, 1997.[8]
