World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman (聖剣使いの禁呪詠唱ワールドブレイク Seiken Tsukai no Wārudo Bureiku?, lit. Holy Swordsman's World Break) is a Japanese light novel series written by Akamitsu Awamura and illustrated by Refeia. SB Creative has published twelve volumes since November 2012 under their GA Bunko imprint. A 12-episode anime television series adaptation by Diomedéa aired between January 11 and March 29, 2015. A manga adaptation began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's seinen manga magazine Comp Ace from June 2014.

Plot

World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman takes place at a high school named the Akane Academy, where students known as Saviors attend. Saviors, divided into Shirogane and Kuroma, are reincarnations of individuals who lived in the past and now possess awakened memories of their past lives. Shirogane manifest weapons and techniques while Kuroma manifest magic for defense purposes; the students are trained to defend against monsters called Metaphysicals, which brutally and indiscriminately attack humans. The story follows main protagonist, Moroha Haimura, who possess both past lives as Flaga, swordmaster and prince of a small country, and Shu Saura, King of the Netherworld. Reincarnated as a 15-year-old boy uniquely with both the abilities of Shirogane and Kuroma, he was chosen to enroll in the academy. He meets Satsuki, a boisterous girl who is very boastful and brash and whose past life was Sarasha, sister of Flaga; and Shizuno, a calm and levelheaded girl, whose past life was Shu Saura's queen.

One day, while attending class on how to manifest Light Skills, he attains and begins to realize his abilities and because of that, he joins the Striker Unit, the elite team of the Akane Academy. At the same time, his past and present lives with Satsuki and Shizuno begin to intertwine. But the school life for a schoolboy like Moroha is not all that. It starts to turn topsy-turvy when the Metaphysicals start to appear in the midst of the community and attack people.

Characters

Main characters

Moroha Haimura (灰村 諸葉 Haimura Moroha?)
Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa (Japanese), Clifford Chapin[1] (English)
He is very dependable, although he gets embarrassed easily when teased. He has two past lives, the first being a Shirogane named Flaga, whom was in love with Satsuki's previous incarnation Sarasha despite being her brother, and the second being a Kuroma named Shu Saura, whom was in a relationship with Shizuno's previous incarnation. Due to having memories of both lives, he is known as an Ancient Dragon and is both a Shirogane and a Kuroma. His sword is "Salatiga" which is a straight katana while as a Kuroma his dark art is the "Black Gehenna" that he infuses into his sword to maximize its destructive capability called the "Yin Yang Kurikara". His other abilities includes his dark art is the "Ouroboros" which is a water spell that allows him to flood vast areas with water, it also allows him to walk on water as well and the "Gorikitsu" which allows him to maximize his plana. It was later revealed that the "Ancient Dragon" is actually a Metaphysical that is cursed to follow him throughout his existence from the time of the first encounter, through his first reincarnation as Flaga up to the present where it has once targeted and killed both Satsuki and Shizuno in their past lives.
Satsuki Ranjō (嵐城 サツキ Ranjō Satsuki?)
Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu (Japanese), Felecia Angelle[1] (English)
She is a boisterous girl who is very boastful and brash. She is classmates with Moroha and Shizuno. In her past life she was a princess named Sarasha. Also in her past life she was in an incestuous relationship with her older brother Flaga, who is Moroha in his past life, which is taboo; in their present time they aren't related by blood where she can now make him fall in love with her over again. She and her family often move from place to place in order to avoid attacks from Metaphysicals, which makes it hard for her to make friends, which is made worse by her condescending attitude towards everyone excluding Moroha. Despite her attitude she doesn't hesitate to help others, even when she is in a disadvantage, she is good in cooking and she always prepares Moroha's meals. As a Savior, she is a Shirogane who uses light skills that materializes into a short sword called "Acieal" that she uses for fighting. She is also capable of detecting any incoming Metaphysicals, she later on was able to utilize her Kongoutsu, an armor of light that protects one from any strikes and she also becomes much faster. It was later on revealed during her past life she was burned to death by the ancient dragon while fleeing from it.
Shizuno Urushibara (漆原 静乃 Urushibara Shizuno?)
Voiced by: Aoi Yūki (Japanese), Jād Saxton[1] (English)
She is calm and levelheaded, unlike Satsuki, she is classmates with Moroha and Satsuki. She is a Kuroma whose previous incarnation was the Witch of the Netherworld, and she uses dark arts by chanting spells or incantations through writing and channeling it through her staff when fighting Metaphysicals. Her dark art mostly composes of various freezing and ice spells, one of it is the "Dreadful Blizzard". In her past life, she was in a relationship with Shu Saura, Moroha's other past life. She is brazen with her feelings towards Moroha to the point that she doesn't mind kissing him in public, especially in front of Satsuki. Her elder brother is the president of the school, and was the one who nominated her to be a member of the Strikers, a group of high-ranking students that fight Metaphysicals, where she serves as a reserve. She was born into an affluent family of utmost influence; however belonging to such a family proves to be burdensome for her, where the expectations are high which makes her feel shackled, her only way of escape is by sleeping and dreaming about her past life with Shu Saura. Like Satsuki, she too has feelings for Moroha, and because of it, they despise each other, almost rivaling for his affection, though occasionally the two would have a truce, and do get along.
In the manga she is called the "Witch of the Netherworld". It was later on revealed that during her past life, she also encountered the ancient dragon, where just like Satsuki she too met her demise when the ancient dragon turned her to ice after it used her own spell against her, then shattering her into pieces.
Maya Shimon (四門 摩耶 Shimon Maya?)
Voiced by: Yui Ogura (Japanese), Tia Ballard[1] (English)
Mari's younger sister, Maya is a young girl prodigy whose powers as a Savior have awakened at a very early age. Though she serves as her sister's assistant, she is mostly in charge of safety around campus, and aside from her knowledge, she can also drive her sister's car.
Her powers allows her to heal anybody who is injured, she can also cast a "Field of Dreams", a temporal field covering a wide area that allows dueling Saviors to fight without getting seriously injured; she can also use it as a protective barrier against any incoming attacks. Her sister has assigned her to watch over Moroha, and she starts to live with him and even sleeps besides him, often referring to herself as his pillow, much to the chagrin of Moroha, Satsuki, and Shizuno.
Elena Arshavina (エレーナ・アルシャヴィナ Erēna Arushavina?)
Voiced by: Reina Ueda (Japanese), Jenya Davidyuk (Russian dialect) (Japanese), Mikaela Krantz (English)
She is a transfer student from Russia and a trained assassin who has an infamous reputation of being called the "Maneater", apparently because it refers to her demon sword "Replazan" that can consume both plana (light skills) and mana. She came to Japan to assassinate Moroha believing that her brother would be killed if she failed. That turned out to be a lie as she is an only child who was orphaned at an early age and her memories were manipulated by Vasilisa's subordinate Cordat. After being freed of her demon sword by Moroha, she falls in love with him and starts to call him onii-chan, much to Satsuki's dismay. She is often called by her nickname "Lesya".

He recruited Moroha to be one of his Strikers after seeing his fighting skills. Though Moroha has fought his brother, he never took it personally and was in fact fascinated as to how he was able to defeat him. He also recruited Shizuno to be one of his reservists upon her elder brother's recommendation, since her brother happens to be the school president and later on Satsuki after she displayed acts of heroism upon encountering a dreadnought-type Metaphysical despite of being at a disadvantage. Even as a senior he learns a lot from Moroha and even admires his courage.
As a Shirogane his weapon is the "Naivete" which is a long and broad heavy sword.
Tokiko Kanzaki (神崎登紀子 Kanzaki Tokiko?)
Voiced by: Yu Kobayashi (Japanese), Trina Nishimura[1] (English)
She is a third-year student and the vice captain of the Swords of Salvation squad who is known to be tough and brave. However despite being a girl, she is also known for her notoriety as a brash pervert who likes checking out anyone's body assets, which is basically her pun for doing sexual advances to anyone regardless of gender. She taken an interest on Moroha, often pinching his rear end, sitting on him, and even holding his head in between her cleavage. She gets so carried away with her sexual fantasies on Moroha that Jin has to step in to restrain her.
She is a Kuroma whose dark art is the "Incinerator" which is basically a fire spell.
Sophie Mertesacker (ソフィーメルテザッカー Sofī Merutezakkā?)
Voiced by: Machico (Japanese), Alexis Tipton[1] (English)
A third-year student hailing from the United States, and member of the Swords of Salvation. She has a weapon resembling a Kanabo with a head at both ends.
Haruka Momochi (百地 春鹿 Momochi Haruka?)
