Yūbikan, destroyed in the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake

Yūbikan (有備館?) was a han school for the Date clan during the Edo period. It was relocated to Ōsaki, Miyagi Prefecture in 1692.[1] Its gardens of 1715 employ the backdrop of the ruins of Iwadeyama Castle for borrowing of scenery ("shakkei").[1][2] They are a nationally designated Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty.[3] The Yūbikan was destroyed and its gardens badly damaged in the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.[4]
