Yalamanchili Satyanarayana "Y. S." Chowdary and also Popularly Known as Sujana Chowdary is an Indian politician [3] and principal founder of Sujana Group of Companies.

Born in Kanchikacherla, he is the fourth child born to Janardhana Rao and Suseela Kumari. Chowdary began his professional career by promoting the Sujana Group of Companies with family and friends in the year 1986 after he obtained his masters from the PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. He was elected unopposed and unanimously as a member of parliament into the Rajya Sabha representing the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from Andhra Pradesh on 22 June 2010. He is also elected as the Parliamentary Leader for Telugu Desam Party On 4 June 2014. On 9 November 2014, Y S Chowdary joined the Union Council of Ministers as Minister of State for Science and Technology & Earth Sciences[1]

Early life

Chowdary was born on 2 June 1961 in Kanchikacherla to Janardhana Rao and Suseela Kumari.[1] He was named after his grandfather. he spent most of his childhood years in Vijayawada, Miryalaguda and Hyderabad. His paternal grandfather, after whom he was named, is a retired Indian Police Service officer. His maternal grandfather was a farmer and a Graduate. His father, Y Janardhana Rao, worked for the Government of Andhra Pradesh where he was a Superintendent Engineer in the AP Irrigation and Power Department.

Chowdary earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1984, from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology, Hyderabad. Pursuing his education after his bachelors he obtained his master's degree from the PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, with specialization in Machine Tool Engineering.

Career

Chowdary created the Sujana Group of Companies in 1986[4] by manufacturing electric fans and other home appliances under the name Padmini.[5] The name Sujana was the amalgamation of the names of his father and mother. The company expanded into steel re-rolling in 1988.[4]

Personal life

Chowdary married Padmaja on 6 August 1989 and the couple have 2 children, Y.S. Karthik the elder son Graduated in Business Management and Entrepreneurship from United States of America and Y Naga Chandini the younger daughter is in the final year of her school education. The family resides in Hyderabad, Telangana.[1]

He holds the membership of the Governing Council as well as the Chairmanship of the Committee of Share Medical Care,[6] A Charitable Society which has established the MediCiti Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) near Hyderabad. The MediCiti Institute of Medical Sciences runs a Medical College, a College of Nursing, a School of Nursing and a 600 bed free-service full-fledged teaching hospital.[7]

The Sujana Charitable Trust and the Sujana Foundation, manifest the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.[4][8][9] The Foundation supports two schools for challenged children in Chennai, an Old Age Home in Hyderabad, and grants scholarships and merit awards for excellence in the areas of academics, sports, social entrepreneurship, innovation in engineering, agriculture, poverty alleviation and rural development.[1][9]

Government positions

On November 9, 2014 during first Cabinet Expansion of the PM Modi's NDA Government, Mr. Chowdary was appointed as Minister of State for Science & Technology. In 2010, Chowdary ran unopposed and was elected as a Member of the Parliament in the Rajya Sabha.[10] He represents the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in the Upper House of the Indian Parliament.[1][10] He is elected as the Telugu Desam Party Parliamentary Leader on June 04th 2014.[11]

Chowdary has been appointed as member of Indo-Singapore Parliamentary Friendship Group, jointly setup as a step towards strengthening bilateral ties between the two parliaments.[12] Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce, Government of India.[13][14] Parliamentary Forum on Youth, Government of India.[13][14] Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India. On 9 November 2014, Y S Chowdary joined the Union Council of Ministers as Minister of State for Science and Technology & Earth Science[14][15]

Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana

Under the SAGY Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana program Mr. Y.S Chowdary has adopted Ponnavaram village which is 60 km away from Vijayawada. Under the program Mr.Chowdary has taken personal interest with a vision to transform this village into a model village by creating holistic and sustainable solutions. 22 areas were identified to be worked on a within a year.

  • Medical camps were conducted diagnosing the people with various ailments and following up for corresponding treatment. Awareness campaign and distribution of Homeopathy medicine kits for common ailments was taken up.
  • Providing all-round infrastructural development, pucca houses for people from the backward and economically weaker sections were constructed under the program IAY Indira Awaas Yojana A new Office Space was built as a one-point location where all the issues arising in the village will be addressed.
  • Cement roads were laid for ease of access within the village and to outer main roads.
  • Canals cleaning and water redirection process to prevent water loggings that was causing high economic losses for farmers in the village.
  • Cooking gas cylinders were distributed.
  • Expedited processes to provide Aadhar card, ration card, pension card, bank passbook and ATM cards to the villagers.
  • Ponnavaram is the first model village in the country to have all the street lights replaced by LED Lights. With the help of SPDCL, every house in the village is lit up with LED bulbs which have a longer life span with low energy consumption, reduced maintenance cost and high safety.
  • Water purification plant (RO plant) was installed to avoid various water-borne diseases that emerge from water bodies in the village. Solar systems for the water plant and Panchayat School have also been incorporated.
  • Swachh Bharat initiatives were undertaken to maintain a green belt and keep the village pollution free. Hand Hygiene Awareness program for school children and cleanliness drives donating dustbins to all the houses in the village and tri-cycles for the village panchayat for collecting garbage and disbursing it. Drainage system and waste management was improved by providing a dump yard facility.
  • Separate toilets for men & women were constructed to overcome the potential risk of unhygienic surrounding and address the issue of lack of privacy for women with common toilets.
  • Literacy drive was conducted identifying the adult persons in the village who were illiterate and a project was designed to train volunteers from the village who would in turn mentor smaller groups of the villagers. A library was opened with books sponsored by Rotary club of Hyderabad.
  • Job Mela was organized to focus on providing employment. Companies like Dr Reddy Labs, Navata Transport, MMC Health care, AD City.com, Andhra Jyothi, Varun Motors, Eureka Forbes, Profit Shoe Company etc. have satisfactorily conducted interviews and selected applicants.
  • Skill development trainings were conducted for the self sustenance and enhancement of economic situation of the villagers.

Development activities aimed to remove poverty, by providing infrastructural development along with emphasis on gender equality, women empowerment, social justice, cleanliness, community service, peace, harmony and eco-friendliness is being administered in Ponnavaram. Other activities

Chowdary is an ex officio member of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).[16] He is a committee member for Hyderabad Telecom District.[17] Task Force on Clean Energy set up by the Columbia Law School, USA, for drawing up a legal contractual system for governing proposed participation of US investments into clean Energy development projects in India.[18]

Chowdary has been a member of the Court (Senate) of the Hyderabad Central University, administered by the Government of India[19] and the Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology Management Committee.[20]

Chowdary is known for his closeness to the AP Chief Minister Sri Nara Chandrababu Naidu and plays a key role for the funding of the Telugu Desam Party. Chowdary's funding was key for his rewarding position in the Telugu Desam Party.

on February 21, 2016. Nampally metropolitan court has issued summons to Chowdary as the company owned by him, Sujana Universal Industries, convicted by Mauritius-based Mauritius Commercial Bank for “non-repayment of a loan”.

He owns the Forum mall at Kukatpally, Hyderabad.
