YES Prep Public Schools, Inc.[1] is a network of public, open-enrollment charter schools located all throughout Greater Houston. The YES network has its headquarters in Greater Sharpstown, Houston.[2][3] The YES program is a university-preparatory program for grades 6-12.

History

YES (which stands for Youth Engaged in Service) began in 1995 as Project YES. The program was founded at Rusk Elementary School in the Houston Independent School District. Since 1998, YES Prep has been operating under a state charter.

Beginning in 2003, YES opened a second campus in northeast Houston, eventually expanding to the fifteen campuses operating today. Over 10,000 students are currently served by the following schools:

  • YES Prep Southeast: located in Houston, the original YES campus serving grades 6-12.[4]
  • YES Prep North Central (originally YES Prep Northeast): located in Aldine, a census-designated place in an unincorporated area in Harris County - serving grades 6-12.[5][6]
  • YES Prep Southwest: located in an unincorporated area in Harris County serving grades 6-12[7]
  • YES Prep East End: located in the East End, serving grades 6-12.[8][9] It was formerly located in the Northside district.[10][11]
  • YES Prep Gulfton (originally YES Prep Lee): serving grades 6-12. At one time it was located in the Lee High School campus.[12] It is now located in the Revolution Campus in Greater Sharpstown, near Gulfton.[3][13]
  • YES Prep West: located in Chinatown, Houston, serving grades 6-12.[14]
  • YES Prep Brays Oaks (originally YES Prep South): located in the Brays Oaks district, serving grades 6-12.[15]
  • YES Prep North Forest: The campus is the former North Forest Independent School District (NFISD) Oak Village Middle School.[16][17]
  • YES Prep Northside: located in the Northside district, serving grades 6-10.
  • YES Prep Fifth Ward: located in the Fifth Ward, serving grades 6-10.
  • YES Prep Northbrook: located in the Spring Branch, Houston, serving grades 6-8. A partnership with Spring Branch ISD, KIPP Houston, and YES Prep Public Schools.
  • YES Prep Hoffman: located in the Aldine in partnership with the Aldine Independent Public Schools, serving grades 6-8. The high school component of YES Prep Hoffman will open in Aldine's Eisenhower High School in 2016. [18]
  • YES Prep White Oak: located in the Greater Inwood area Inwood Forest, Houston, currently serving grades 6-8. [19]
  • YES Prep Northbrook High School: located in the Spring Branch, Houston, serving grade 9. A partnership with Spring Branch ISD, KIPP Houston, and YES Prep Public Schools.
  • YES Prep Southside: located in Sunnyside, Houston, serving grade 6 with students from nearby Sunnyside and Third Ward neighborhoods.

Recognition

The YES system was rated as Exemplary and Recognized by the Texas Education Agency for 8 consecutive years, ranking as Houston's best open-enrollment high school by the Houston Chronicle, and a place on Newsweek's Best High Schools in America list for both 2006 (ranked #88) and 2007 (#38). In 2012, YES Prep's Southeast Campus was ranked number four, and its North Central Campus was ranked the number six high school in the Greater Houston Area by Children At Risk.[20]

In 2010, Oprah Winfrey donated 1 million dollars each to six charter school systems, including YES Prep.[21]

Senator Ted Cruz (R)Texas, fulfilled his promise to give up his salary during the government shutdown of 2013 by donating $7,627.40, "equal to 16 days of gross pay," to the Houston-based organization, YES Prep, "that he and Heidi support." [22]

Athletics

Yes Prep Brays Oaks 2015 Varsity Flag Football East Texas District Champions; East Texas Regional Champions and East Texas State Champion Finalist. YES Prep West 2014-15 Junior Varsity State and District champions. YES Prep Southeast's Basketball program in men's was successful in becoming District 25-AA Co-Champions (2010-2011) along with Hitchcock high school. YES Prep Southeast's Middle School Team placed 2nd place during the Championships. (2012-2013) In 2014, YES Prep Southeast participated in the Texas Charter School Academic & Athletic League and won the state championship for boys' cross country team competition while the girls' team also placed second.[23]
