12999 Torun (1981 QJ2) is a main-belt asteroid discovered on August 30, 1981, by Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station of the Lowell Observatory. It has an orbital period of 1252.3536421 days (3.43 years).[1]

The asteroid was renamed in 2008 after the city of Toruń, Poland. Toruń is the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus, a very important place in Polish and European history (with the UNESCO World Heritage listed Old Town), and the main site of the Nicolaus Copernicus University where its observatory at Piwnice, the largest in Poland, is located.
