1779 Paraná, provisional designation 1950 LZ, is an asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 15 June 1950 by Argentine astronomer Miguel Itzigsohn at the La Plata Astronomical Observatory in La Plata, capital of the province of Buenos Aires.[3]

The asteroid orbits the Sun at a distance of 1.8–2.5 AU once every 3.21 years (1,172 days). Its orbit shows an eccentricity of 0.16 and is nearly coplaner with the plane of the ecliptic, tilted by only 1 degree. Little is known about the asteroids size, composition, albedo and rotation, despite having a well-observed orbit with the lowest possible uncertainty, indicated by an condition code of 0, and an observation arc that spans over a period of more than 65 years.[1]

The asteroid was named for a large and 4,880-kilometers long Paraná River that runs through northern Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. It is a major tributary to the La Plata river, where the city of La Plata and the discovering observatory are located (also see 1029 La Plata).[2]

The body is also classified as a (provisionally) discovered body by the Palomar–Leiden survey (6116 P-L, or PLS6116). However, no further explanation has been given in the Minor Planet Center's discovery circumstances.[1][3]
