- 1 January – TV3's news bulletin coverage first aired as Berita TV3. It produced its own news program and broadcast from Kuala Lumpur. This broadcast area was only limited to Klang Valley area.
- 11 January – The Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (KOMTAR) in Penang, then the tallest building in Southeast Asia, is officially opened by Prime Minister Dato' Sri Dr Mahathir Mohammad.
- 30 March – The Malaysian Parliament celebrates the 25th anniversary of its formation.
- April – The first Belilah Barangan Buatan Malaysia (Made in Malaysia) campaign is launched.
- 2 June – Malaysia's first teletext service, Beriteks is launched.
- 8 July – The new Tabung Haji building at Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, is officially opened by Prime Minister Dato' Sri Dr Mahathir Mohammad.
- 10 July – The first Malaysian national car Proton Saga is officially launched by Prime Minister Dato' Sri Dr Mahathir Mohammad.
- 2 August – Official opening ceremony of the Penang Bridge by Prime Minister Dato' Sri Dr Mahathir Mohammad. He drove across the bridge in a red Proton Saga carrying the national flag to officiate the opening ceremony.
- 31 August – The Proclamation of Independence Memorial (formerly The Malacca Club) in Malacca Town, Malacca is officially opened by Prime Minister Dato' Sri Dr Mahathir Mohammad.
- 2 September – Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah of Selangor celebrates his 25th silver jubilee of his throne.
- 2 September – The Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Malaysia's first convention and exhibition centre, is officially opened by Prime Minister Dato' Sri Dr Mahathir Mohammad and the 1985 UMNO General Assembly is held in Dewan Merdeka, PWTC for the first time.
- 11 September – Sultan Azlan Shah is installed as the 34th Sultan of Perak.
- 14 September – The Penang Bridge is officially opened to traffic.
- 19 November – The Memali Incident occurred in Kedah. 14 civilians and four policemen are killed.
