Season Review

June

On 16 June 2015, Lokomotiv has confirmed Igor Cherevchenko as their manager for the upcoming season.[1] Subsequently, through a communication issued by the club on their Twitter and Facebook accounts, it was announced that Vedran Corluka was chosen by Igor Cherevchenko as the club's new captain for the 2015-2016 season. Lokomotiv's main squad reported for training on June 17 and the players were subjected to a medical check-up.[2]

On 23 June 2015, the Russian Football Premier League published the fixture list for the upcoming Russian Premier League season.[3] The season will run from 17 July 2015 to 21 May 2016, with a winter break between the beginning of December and the beginning of March.

July

Lokomotiv began their season with the Russian Super Cup against Zenit Saint Petersburg. The match was played at Zenit's home stadium, the Petrovsky Stadium. Lokomotiv managed to hold out Zenit for a 1-all draw but eventually lost the tie on penalties.[4]

Lokomotiv started their league campaign at Mordovia Saransk. Lokomotiv won their season opener by courtesy of a goal from Petar Škuletić.[5] The next match was once again away from home, this time against Anzhi Makhachkala. Buoyed by the home crowd, Anzhi went ahead but Lokomotiv recovered brilliantly and eventually ran out 3-1 winners.[6]

August

In the third round of the Russian Premier League, Lokomotiv hosted Dynamo. Dynamo Moscow went ahead just before the half time before Vedran Corluka's equalizer on the hour mark.[7] Lokomotiv's next match was against Ural. Lokomotiv started strongly and notwithstanding a better showing from Ural in the second half, Lokomotiv eventually won the encounter comfortably by the score of 3-1.[8] In the next match, Lokomotiv welcomed Terek and the two teams played to a nil-nil draw.[9]

Subsequently, Lokomotiv travelled to Ufa and cruised to a three-nil victory in what was an easy win for the guests.[10] In the last match in August and prior to the international break, Lokomotiv faced Krasnodar. The match resulted to be a close encounter but eventually Lokomotiv recovered after going down to run 2-1 winners.[11]

September

The mini-break for international matches seemed to have disrupted Lokomotiv's league momentum. Indeed, in a rusty performance away from home against Rubin, who were fresh from the sacking of Rinat Bilyaletdinov, Lokomotiv lost the encounter by three-goals-to-one.[12]

In the following match, Lokomotiv opened their Europa League commitments by travelling to Lisbon to face Sporting CP. To the surprise of many, Lokomotiv stunned the hosts and recorded a three-to-one victory, courtesy of a double from Samedov.[13] Subsequently, Lokomotiv welcomed Krylya Sovetov and after a slow start Lokomotiv eventually disposed of the famous Soviet-era club by two goals to nil.[14]

Three days after, Lokomotiv faced Torpedo Armavir in the Round of 32 of the Russian Cup and Škuletić's goal 18 minutes from end was enough for Lokomotiv to see off their Russian First Division opponents.[15] Lokomotiv took their good form into their next match against CSKA Moscow away from home. Indeed, despite falling behind courtesy of a dubious penalty, Lokomotiv managed to recover and eventually held their cross-town rivals to one-all draw.[16]
