The men's 4 × 100 metres relay at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Beijing National Stadium on 29 August.[1][2]
On paper this looked like Jamaica's advantage and just to be prepared, Jamaica ran Rasheed Dwyer to rest their star Usain Bolt in the heats. The United States employed a rare strategy of not resting anybody, even though Remontay McClain and Isiah Young were signed up, they used their A team in the heats.
In those heats, USA won the first heat efficiently and relatively easily over a British team resting Chijindu Ujah team. In the second heat, Jamaica cruised to a fast 37.41 with a very efficient Chinese home team clearly handing to the anchor leg in second place in the process of setting the Asian Continental Record. France's Jimmy Vicaut came from behind to pass China, the entire heat fast enough to allow Antigua and Barbuda, and Canada to advance.
With a rested Bolt waiting on the anchor, anybody else, most notably the United States, would need to have a huge lead going in to the final leg. USA was in good position to do that making a clean handoff the first two times between Trayvon Bromell, Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay, while Jamaica was stiff between Nesta Carter and Asafa Powell.[3] Around the final turn, Nickel Ashmeade made up ground on Gay, Bolt the first to start moving. Mike Rodgers may have been too late in starting, because Gay had trouble making the exchange, Rodgers ultimately turning, looking back at Gay and taking the baton out of his hand. Even after the exchange, Gay passed Rodgers while Bolt was already gone down the straightaway, which is not the desired result under any scenario. The confusion that took the baton out of the zone ultimately got the US disqualified.[4] Jamaica ran away with an easy win.[5]
On the far outside, almost unnoticed by the world TV feed, the Chinese team was running efficiently with their lone sub-10 sprinter Su Bingtian gaining at the end of the third leg and making the final exchange quickly to gain a couple of positions vs Germany to their inside and the British team that could not complete the final exchange between James Ellington and Ujah. On the inside, having already expended its USC stars Aaron Brown and Andre De Grasse, Canada was next. Justyn Warner barely holding off Aleixo-Platini Menga for the bronze but unable to make headway against the Chinese Zhang Peimeng in what turned out to be silver medal position.[6]
