Rule changes

The 2016 Camping World Truck Series season introduced several major changes:

  • A "caution clock" rule is in effect during most races; a competition caution is thrown after twenty consecutive minutes of green flag racing. No free pass is awarded on these cautions, and the 20-minute clock is reset upon all restarts. The clock rule is not used during the final 20 laps (final 10 laps on longer tracks) of the race. Due to its multi-stage format, it will also not be used.[11]
  • A playoff format similar to the Chase for the Cup used in the Sprint Cup Series was adopted. After the 16-round regular season, the top-eight drivers will have their points reset. Round of 8 will consist of New Hampshire, Las Vegas and Talladega, where the top-six drivers will advance to the next round. Round of 6 will consist of Martinsville, Texas and Phoenix. Top-four drivers will advance to the Championship 4 at Homestead. Race winners will automatically advance to the next round. As is the case during the Sprint Cup Chase, the four drivers eliminated during the playoff will have their scores from all seven races accumulated to race for positions 5–8.[12]
  • Truck Series director Elton Sawyer also announced the availability of crate engines, known as the "Delta engine", for teams to use starting with the Charlotte race.[13]

Fox Sports 1 will televise every race except the Fred's 250 on October 22, which will air on Fox.

Notes

  • ^1 The race at Charlotte Motor Speedway was postponed from May 20 to May 21 because of inclement weather.[14]
  • ^2 Because of chassis and body regulations, Ram is only eligible to race at circuits 1.25 miles or shorter (except Dover) and road courses that use the previous-generation body. Fiat last submitted a truck in the 2012 season, before the current generation body used at longer tracks was used.[citation needed]
