A&P Family Mart, sometimes referred to simply as Family Mart or Family Mart Sav-A-Center, was a Clearwater, Florida-based[1] chain of full-service supermarkets in the southern United States from the 1970s through the 1990s; it was part of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P) group of stores. The last Family Mart closed in 1999.[2]

Family Mart's corporate headquarters opened in Smyrna, Georgia in 1976, moving to Florida in 1983. In 1987, the Florida stores were sold to Kroger, an Ohio-based grocery chain, operating under the name Florida Choice before being sold to Kash n' Karry.

The first Family Mart opened in Greenville, South Carolina as The Family Mart in 1977.[3] The Family Mart chain consisted of mostly 40,000–55,000 square feet (3,700–5,100 m2) stores, and were among the first A&P stores to possess a combination of a full-service supermarket and pharmacy.[4]

Family Mart went defunct in 1999 as A&P closed almost all of its Southeast stores.

Store design

In the 1980s and 1990s most Family Marts replaced the orange in its store motif with green (keeping white) to match the colors used in A&P and Super Fresh stores.[5]
