Publication History

It has since been republished numerous times, such as when it was republished in 1904 by D. Estes[1] and in 2021 by Good Press.[2]

Social Issues

In this work, Tolstoy shows his developing, deep thought about social conditions and issues in Russia, particularly regarding the peasants.[3] According to literary critic George Steiner, this piece by Tolstoy proves that even early on, he regarded writing as serving a social purpose, and not as existing solely for entertainment purposes.[4]
