The New Montgomery Street building

The Academy of Art University, formerly Academy of Art College, is a privately owned for-profit art school in San Francisco, California, United States. It has over 18,000 students, and claims to be the largest privately owned art and design school in the United States.[3] It is one of the largest property owners in San Francisco, with the main campus located on New Montgomery Street in the South of Market district.[4]

The instructional staff consists of 283 full-time teachers and 1,154 adjuncts. [5]

It is famous for its School of Fashion, School of Graphic Design and School of Game Design. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the school has a 6-year graduation rate of 31%[5]

History

The Academy of Art University was founded by Richard S. Stephens in 1929 and was called the new School of Advertising Art.[6] He included 46 students meeting in one room in San Francisco’s Kearny Street. It is now owned by the Stephens Institute. Since 2002, the university has been offering online arts programs. In 2005, it became the first art university to be invited to exhibit student work at New York Fashion Week biannually.[7][8]

Courses

The school offers associate, bachelor's[1] and master's degrees in numerous subjects.[2]

Diane Baker is head of the acting program of the school.[9]

Automobile Collection

The University owns and operates the Academy of Art Automobile Museum which focuses on the history of the art and the design of automobiles. Some of the cars on display at the museum include those from car manufacturers such as Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Cadillac, Duesenberg, Jaguar and Packard.[10] [11][12]

Between 22 and 29 November 2014, this car collection was showcased at the 57th Annual International Auto Show. The event took place at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.[13] One of the automobiles displayed was “the Tucker Torpedo,” a Tucker 48 which has been an inspiration for Hollywood filmmakers.[14] Only 51 of these cars were manufactured in total. Other vehicles displayed by the university at the show were: the noir 1935 Duesenberg SJ Convertible Coupe, the Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow, the 1937 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante Coupe, the 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB, the 1928 Daimler Royal Limousine and the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe.[15][16]

Athletics

The school sports teams, the Urban Knights, compete as members of the Pacific West Conference in nine sports in NCAA Division II.[17]

In the 2014-2015 season, the men's cross country team had a second place finish and the women's team had a record fourth place finish, earned at the Pacific West Conference Championships. Valentin Pepiot, their third NCAA Nationals individual qualifier, was one of the top finishers from the PacWest in the postseason finale.[18] The Academy of Arts earned a record 10 PacWest postseason honors. For the 2015, indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, they had seven All-Americans honors and one NCAA individual champion in Jordan Edwards.[18]
