Alberto do Rego Rangel (29 May 1871 – 14 December 1945) was a Brazilian engineer and writer.

Biography

Alberto Rangel was born in Recife, the son of Joaquim do Rego Rangel. He graduated in Engineering from the Military School of Rio de Janeiro, in 1899. The following year, with the rank of ensign, he commanded an artillery brigade during the Naval Revolts. After working on engineering projects in Maranhão and Pará, he left the Army (which he criticized in his 1900 pamphlet Fora de forma) and moved to Amazonas, where he was general director of Lands and Colonization and later government secretary, during the administration of Antônio Constantino Nery.

While working for the government of Amazonas he wrote his first book, the short story collection Inferno verde (Green Hell). The work was only published in 1908, with a preface by Euclides da Cunha, with whom he had become friends at the Military School. He joined the diplomatic service and traveled to France, England, Spain, and Portugal. During this period, he researched the documents that would serve as the basis for his books on historical and biographical themes, and continued writing short stories. At the beginning of World War II, he left his position in the Brazilian consulate in Paris and returned to Rio de Janeiro.

Alberto Rangel died in Nova Friburgo.
