Amer Shafi (born 10 February 1982) is a Jordanian footballer who plays as goalkeeper for Al-Wehdat[1] and Jordan national football team.[2]

Early life

Shafi grew up in Jabal Al-Hashmi Al-Shamali where he attended school and played soccer.[3]

Club career

Shafi began his career as a midfielder and later on became goalkeeper. After playing for a couple of years in Al-Yarmouk,[4] he was chosen to be the goalkeeper on the Jordanian national team. After his outstanding and incredible performances in the 2004, 2011 and 2015 AFC Asian Cup tournaments, he was offered to take proficiency in Europe, but was not able to leave Jordan due to family conditions and his international career. [5]

International career

Shafi played his first international match with the Jordan national team against Kenya in a friendly match on 17 August 2002 which ended in a 1–1 draw.[6] Shafi is and has always been nicknamed the "Whale of Asia" due to his outstanding and incredible acrobatic saves and performances.[7]
