Ashanta Baghphukan (Assamese: অশান্ত বাঘফুকন) (born: 1963), real name Tarun Phukan, is the Chief Organising Secretary of ULFA, the banned terrorist group of Assam.[1] He, along with five other senior ULFA leaders, went missing during the Operation All Clear carried out against the group by Royal Bhutanese Army in December, 2003.[2]

Handing over the kins

On Dec 24, 2003, Phukan’s wife Hangshipa Hazarika (alias Malina Ingtipi alias Hema Hansipi[2]) who is also a member of the group's women wing, and son Kareng were handed over to the Deputy Commissioner of Nalbari by the Bhutanese Royal Government. They were accompanied by 64 kins of other militants of the group. The Nalbari district administration later took them to the Tamulpur 30-bedded hospital campus for primary check-ups.[3]

Kin’s fast-unto-death

On March 24, 2003 the wives of the missing leaders has started a fast-unto-death demanding information on the whereabouts of their husbands[2][4] They had been admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital and were being nasal fed for they had refused to take food in custody.[2]

Interference of court

On March 13, 2007, the Guwahati High Court directed the Central as well as the State Government to submit information about the missing leaders on March 30 of the year. The central government accordingly submitted to the court an instruction related to it. The court, however, after proper examining the instruction, asked both governments to file an affidavit within seven days.[2]
