The Liberal Democratic Party is the main libertarian political party in Australia. It was founded in 2001 by John Humphreys, running in the 2001 and 2004 ACT elections, before registering as a federal political party and contesting the 2007 federal election. Australia also has a small Libertarian Party, but it is not registered with the Australian Electoral Commission^[1]. The Smokers' Rights Party also claims to be libertarian, and has an informal coalition agreement with the Liberal Democratic Party.

The Australian Libertarian Society runs a website focused on libertarianism in Australian, and run an annual "Friedman Conference" each year, where they present the "Australian Libertarian Awards". The 2014 winners were Senator David Leyonhjelm (Libertarian of the Year), Simon Breheny (Young Libertarian of the Year), Margie Illiescu (Libertarian Activist of the Year), and Nev Kennard (Libertarian Lifetime Achievement). Australian think tanks such as the Centre for Independent Studies and the Institute of Public Affairs are sometimes regarded as having something of a libertarian leaning.^{[citation needed]}
