Chisnallwood Intermediate is the main Intermediate school in the eastern suburbs of Christchurch, New Zealand. The school has a student roll of 833 students as of 2008. The school was threatened with closure or merger in the 2013 Christchurch school review by Education Minister Hekia Parata, but was spared after putting up a strong fight.[2]

Music Department

In 2005, the school built a top rate Music Department catering for all things music, drama and extra activities i.e., Flexi-spec, SIMS, SAMI, (The Arts, Science and Maori and/or Information Technology). This building is run by Judith Bell, highly qualified and talented. Music groups include, Orchestra Jazz Band Theory Club Percussion Ensemble Recorder Ensemble String Ensemble Rock Band. The building consists of many rooms, three itinerant music tutoring rooms, a drama/media room with piano, projector screen and state-of-the-art sound system. A small instrument storing room, a recording studio complete with iMac, sound system, and sound mixing board. The main room, used for most group rehearsals, has all that the drama/media room has, but is much larger. The main room, commonly called, the music room, is fully fit for a complete orchestral scoring session, with mics, headphones, computers and instruments.

Gymnasium

Completed in late 2007, the new hall and gymnasium has a basketball court (indoor), netball posts, teachers' offices, Sports equipment cupboards, stage, lighting, sound system, projector screens and a fully equipped sound booth. Assemblies are held in the hall, as well as most Physical Education sessions and sports practices. Superloos and changing rooms are also built on the side of the structure.

Successmaker

The successmaker suite is a small classroom of computers loaded with educational programs to extend pupils knowledge in Mathematics, English, reading and spelling. Small groups of children go to this suite during class time and/or after school extra tutoring. Their progress is monitored by the program itself, as well as the teacher, Mrs Stevenson.

$30,000 Arts Grant

Early in 2008, Chisnallwood received a grant of $30,000 to produce, make and release a short feature film. Michael Bell was the chosen artist to assist in the production of the project, and was involved in every aspect of making the film including Shooting, Music Composition, Editing, Sound, Lighting, Scriptwriting, Producing and Directing. The film premiered on Tuesday, 22 August 2008, at Reading Cinemas in Christchurch. The school had bought another iMac, used for editing and music composition, and is now in the computer lab in the Music Suite.
