Dhanurjay "DJ" Patil (born August 3, 1974) is the Chief Data Scientist of the United States Office of Science and Technology Policy.[1][2][3] He previously served as the Vice President of Product at RelateIQ, which was acquired by Salesforce.com, as Chief Product Officer of Color Labs, and as Head of Data Products and Chief Scientist of LinkedIn.[4] His father, Suhas Patil, is a venture capitalist and the founder of Cirrus Logic.

Early Life and Education

Patil attended Monta Vista High School and De Anza College, both in Cupertino, California.[5][6] He holds a B.A. in mathematics from the University of California, San Diego. He received a PhD from the University of Maryland College Park, in applied mathematics, which is part of the University of Maryland College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. He also served as a faculty member at the University of Maryland, and used open datasets published by NOAA to improve numerical weather forecasting.

Career

Patil has held positions at LinkedIn, Greylock Partners, Skype, PayPal, and eBay. He also briefly worked at the U.S. Department of Defense employing social network analysis to help anticipate emerging threats.[7][8]


Along with Jeff Hammerbacher, Patil is credited with coining the term "data science".[9]
