Daniel "Dan" Potts (born 13 April 1994)[4] is an English professional footballer who plays as a full-back for League Two club Luton Town. He started his career at West Ham United, making 13 first-team appearances alongside loan spells at Colchester United and Portsmouth, before joining Luton in 2015. He has also represented England at under-18, under-19 and under-20 levels.

Club career

Potts joined West Ham United aged nine and signed as a scholar in May 2010.[5] He made his reserve team debut away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on 27 April 2011,[6] and his senior debut at home on 17 December 2011, in a 1–0 victory over Barnsley,[7] just a day after signing a professional contract with the club.[8] He received the Young Player of the Year award in May 2012 after making four appearances in the 2011-12 season during which West Ham were promoted back to the Premier League after defeating Blackpool 2-1 in the Championship play-off final.[9][10]

On 23 November 2012 he joined Colchester United in League One on a month long loan.[11] He made his debut on 24 November in a 5–1 defeat to Milton Keynes Dons.[12] In January 2013 Potts was recalled from his loan by West Ham.[13] On 23 January 2013 he was taken from the pitch in the 82nd minute with concussion, after a clash of heads with Bacary Sagna, in a Premier League game against Arsenal resulting in 12 minutes of stoppage time being added on after 90 minutes.[14][15]

On 20 November 2013, Potts joined League Two club Portsmouth on a month-long loan.[16] He made his debut in a 2–1 defeat at Fratton Park against Scunthorpe United.[17] Potts returned to West Ham in December 2013.[18] He was released by West Ham at the end of the 2014–15 season.[19]

A day after his release, Potts signed a two-year contract with League Two side Luton Town.[20]

International career

As his father was born in the United States, Potts was presumed eligible to play for both the England national football team and the United States men's national soccer team. Potts was invited and took part in a United States under-20 camp in 2011.[21] He made his debut as a substitute, playing 21 minutes, for the American U-20 team against France in a friendly game in Vichy.[22][23] However, in April 2012 US Soccer officials determined that Potts was not eligible for US citizenship as his father did not meet residency requirements to pass along citizenship to his son, meaning he could no longer play for the US at any level.[24]

Potts played the first half for the England U-18 team in 3–0 win against Poland at Crewe's Alexandra Stadium on 7 March 2012.[25] He represented England for the U-19's in a friendly against Finland in November 2012.[26]

On 28 May 2013, he was named in manager Peter Taylor's 21-man squad for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup.[27] He made his debut on 16 June 2013 in a 3–0 win in a warm-up game against Uruguay.[28]
