Dedh Ishqiya is a 2014 Indian black comedy film directed by Abhishek Chaubey starring Madhuri Dixit, Arshad Warsi, Naseeruddin Shah, and Huma Qureshi in the lead roles. It is a sequel of Ishqiya and is produced by Raman Maroo and Vishal Bharadwaj. The film was released worldwide on 10 January 2014, with 1200 screens release in India.[5]

Plot

Khalujan (Naseeruddin Shah) and his nephew Babban (Arshad Warsi), a thief duo, pose as a Nawab and his attendant, and manage to run away with a prized necklace from a jewellery shop. In the police chase they get separated, while Khalujaan is hurt. Months later Babban traces Khalujan again, this time posing a nawab, at a poetry contest. It is a mushaira organised by Begum Para (Madhuri Dixit), the widowed Begum of Mahmudabad as per the wishes of her deceased husband. The winner would win the Begum as bride and in turn become the Nawab of Mahudabad. However, by the opening night, Babban traces Khalujaan. Soon Babban falls in love with Begum Para's assistant, Muniya (Huma Qureshi), while Khalujaan has his heart set on Begum herself.

To complicate the matters there is another suitor in the fray, a local MLA-gangster Jaan Mohammed (Vijay Raaz), who is making the poet Nawab Italwi (Manoj Pahwa) write poetry for him to recite at the contest. Khalujaan tries to impress the Begum by giving her the prized necklace he stole earlier, but on the final day Begum declares Jaan Mohammed to be her husband and the new nawab of Mahmudabad.

Disappointed Khalujaan approaches Begum with a gun, but just before a masked man kidnaps her at gun point. Khalujaan chases them and blocks their way only to discover that the masked man was Babban. Begum has plotted her own kidnapping to extort money from the new nawab (Jaan Mohammad) as she was left bankrupt by her late husband. Babban calls Jaan Mohammed (who now is aware of Begum's plan) to bring 100 million rupees ransom money to a railway station. All four reach the railway station to collect the money but find the bag empty and surrounded by Jaan Mohammad's goons. Much to their good fortune Nawab Italwi arrives with a police force and cross-firing starts.

Begum and Muniya escape from the situation leaving behind Babban and Khalujaan to be arrested. One and half months later, both get bail and a message from Begum and Muniya, who are now settled in an unknown city by selling off the prized necklace. Movie ends with the duo once again surrounded by Mushtaq (Salman Shahid) and his gang.

Casting

At a private party, the producers of Ishqiya, Shemaroo and Vishal Bhardwaj, announced the sequel with the same cast and crew.[6] In April 2012, Madhuri Dixit signed on for the sequel of Ishqiya, her first film after moving back to the country in November 2011 to play a grey character called Shahi Begum.[7] The two male leads Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi were retained from the original.[8] The role of supporting actress first was offered to Asin Thottumkal but, she refused to work in a supporting role in Dedh Ishqiya and in one interview she said that she thought that her role is not very attractive so, she left the project. Kangana Ranaut then signed Dedh Ishqiya[9] and said she was going to start shooting soon.[10] But in December 2012 she opted out due to date issues.[11] Huma Qureshi replaced Kangna Ranaut.[12] Arshad Warsi stated that he was paired with Huma and Madhuri was paired opposite Naseeruddin Shah.[13]

Filming

The shooting was initially to start in September and was shifted to November later, but it was postponed even further.[14] The shooting of Dedh Ishqiya began on 27 February 2013.[15] The Mahmudabad palace near Barabanki was spruced up for the shoot.[16] Madhuri Dixit performed mujra to a song titled Apne Karar Mein.[17] Pandit Birju Maharaj choreographed the dance sequence for Madhuri Dixit for the film.[18] First look of the film was released on 25 October 2013 and the trailer got released on 8 November 2013.

With the exception of Hamari Atariya, music of the film is composed by Vishal Bhardwaj while lyrics have been written by Gulzar. Singles Hamari Atariya sung by Rekha Bhardwaj (a re-working of Begum Akhtar's original) & "Dil Ka Mizaaj Ishqiya" sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan were released.[citation needed] A single titled "Horn OK Please" was also released sung by Honey Singh, Sukhwinder Singh and Anushka Manchanda.

Critical reception

Anupama Chopra, the Hindustan Times movie critic said, "Dedh Ishqiya is worth watching just for Abhishek Chaubey's ambition. He is not constrained by the demands of the box office."[19]

Giving it 5 out of 5 stars, Rediff India's movie critic Raja Sen called Dedh Ishqiya a genuinely smart film.[20]

Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama also gave positive review, Ishqiya was sharp, spicy and volatile, with impulsive characters and a storyline taking a somersault every few minutes. Dedh Ishqiya is no different. It transports you to a diverse world, but like the first part, this one focuses on love and deceit as well. Also, it's far more complex this time around and the truth hits you like a ton of bricks![21]

Martin D'Souza from Glamsham Editorial gave the film a negative review and a score of 2/5 stating that the film opens on the wrong foot and later moves at a languid pace.[22]

In a positive review, Deepanjana Pal from Firstpost praised direcdtor Chaubey the most, saying: "Chaubey is two films old and compared to Ishqiya, Dedh Ishqiya is far more elaborate, complicated and ambitious. Like a skipping stone, the film touches upon a variety of genres — action, comedy, romance, social critique — and Chaubey handles them deftly"[23]

In another Firstpost review, Mihir Fadnavis said: Dedh Ishqiya is smarter, funnier, richer and way more gorgeous than its predecessor. If you're a fan of clever lines with terrific actors, great writing, masterful direction and Urdu poetry, Dedh Ishqiya hits your sweet spot. If you don’t really give a damn about any of this and just want a fun time at the movies, Dedh Ishqiya is perhaps the most hilarious thriller Bollywood has produced.[24]

Box office

Dedh Ishqiya opened with an average occupancy at screens with a screen count of 1000–1200.[25] It collected ₹30 million (US$450,000) on its opening day.[26] The film grossed around ₹115 million (US$1.7 million) in first weekend.[27] Dedh Ishqiya collected around ₹17.5 million (US$260,000) nett on first Monday taking its four-day total to ₹133 million (US$2.0 million).[28] Overseas collection of Dedh Ishqiya was around $525,000 in first weekend.[29] In second weekend, Dedh Ishqiya had a dull performance and managed to earn just ₹40.0 million (US$590,000) in domestic box office. From Monday to Wednesday, Dedh Ishqiya earned ₹65 million (US$970,000)[30] In overseas, its performance was even poorer as it just earned ₹15 million (US$220,000). Bringing the worldwide total overall ₹316 million (US$4.7 million) in two weeks. Vinod Mirani from Rediff termed the movie to have an average opening .[31] However, Dedh Ishqiya failed to collect too well in its second week and in its third week it lost almost all of its screens to Jai Ho. The film was made on a budget of around 410 million including its print and advertising.[3] Dedh Ishqiya only managed to recover 132 million from its domestic theatrical business which is less than half its investment, hence The movie was declared as a flop by the major trades and box office sites.[32][33][34]
