Koon was born in Kajang, Hulu Langat, Selangor, and studied at Bukit Jalil Sports School.
In 2011, Koon announced quiting from gymnastics for good. Reports cite that there have been numerous problems with the National Team Coach Elena Kholodova. Reports claim that Kholodova is said to have mistreated Koon, forcing her to train when injured and was denied attention from health professionals just before the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Dehli.
